It generally means that this:
http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=476
isn't working.
Can also be poor connections or computer fault.
Power off, if investigating.
Regards,

Sticking up into the sump, under the filters.

Thanks. Do I get at it from underneath the machine or down through the inside. What does a new one cost and is it worth changing it to see if it works? Is it an easy part to change?

It's a twist fit from underneath. Click link above for prices etc. It should give a reading in Kohms if testing, but it may still not be working.......
Power off, of course.

Additionally, the power light flashes and the machine beeps continuously while the F1 fault is showing. Does this change the diagnosis? I have taken out all of the filters etc and cleaned everything as well as I can. I have soaked up all the water from in the sump and can see the part sticking up - I don't think I can get it out by going in from the inside!
Cheers

What does this part do anyhow? Does it just sense the presence of water?

Temperature sensor, using negative thermal co-efficiency coupled to a comparator array in the computer .

If it's not this part what should I try next - is it time for a new machine do you think?

Penguin, I've ordered a new part as you recommend. I'll change it if I can and get back to you if I have any problems. Should I continue to use the same thread if I need to get back to you or do I start a new one?
Cheers

Please keep it in the one thread. Bit of patience is the main thing required. Remove decor door to give yourself better access, mind the sharp edges and ensure that power is off.
Good luck,
