Lexmark model X5470 powers ON but will not function?

The X5470 powers ON in the Copy Mode with the text "Lexmark 5400 Series" in the display and the print head moves to the right about one third of its full travel and returns to the left side. At this point the X5470 is frozen. There is no functional response or change (only a chirp) when pressing any of the buttons on the control panel. All trouble shooting attempts, including uninstall and re-install of software from original CD produces no change. The computer does acknowledge the presence of a printer USB connection. When attempting to print, the computer displays the following message: Communication Not Available". The printer cannot communicate with the computer.
Also, the X5470 will not function as a stand-alone copier, scanner or printer. FAX function not being used at this time.
