Further to the other answers, when it is cleaned out leave the door and drawer ajar in between washes. The air flow through works wonders.

Do an empty wash at the highest temperature setting and put a cupful of white vinegar in the drum. The combination of high temp and increased acidity should clear it out. Do that every couple of months to keep it clear.

you need to do boil washes in machines to kill the bacteria that lives inside.low temp washing is good for enviroment and clothes but not the washing machine!
