Hi - I have a Dell Latitude D820 laptop. Yesturday after turning it off it just would not start up again. I can turn it on, see the 'Dell' welcome screen but no OS loads after that and is stuck on a blank screen. I cannot even load up in safe mode. It is like the HDD has locked itself, but you can can hear the HDD spinning at power up.
if your laptop has a floppy disk capability then down load the rom bios firmware for your model from manufacturers website. download the rom bios to a floppy disk then run from boot.
this sorted my dell lattitude before.

just leave it to run when switched on . because you may have a problem with software. it may take a while but it will try to fix itself. if it does recover, then once the desktop comes back, go to start menu. type from on run cmd, then in command prompt type chkdsk/f
this genrally sorts it out.
