I have a brand new (but no warranty) sansui vrdvd 4005 and the vcr works fine, but the dvd player won't accept any discs (incorrect disc error c104) including empty dvd-rw discs for recording. Could I have hooked it up wrong? is there some setting I have missed? I have tried cleaning the lens.
I bought and installed an SH-S222 ide drive in my DRDVD4005. The drive accepts a DVD and opens it to the "Warning Frame" of a movie. It then starts, but everything appears unviewable and out of sync. I tried drive in my computer and it works fine. Win XP does load drivers though. I still believe the Sansui drivers are on the interface of the Sansui and are special to the DVR 1060R/XV dvd.

I have the same problem with the DVR-1060r/XV. It stopped playing any DVD suddenly. C104 error on any disc. Took drive apart and cleaned thinking something may have affected the laser, but no dice. At several forums a Nec N1300a was suppose to be an exact replacement. Found one on Ebay spent $25.00. After install I now get a "no disk error". Could be this drive is bad, but seller had 5 stars and said it test good. The drive mechanically is not a replacement and would require jury rigging to use if it did work. I'm wondering if the DVR 1060 has a special "Flash Rom"? Windows supplies the driver for most DVDs but the Vrdvd4005 may have a special set of drivers on the interface. I just ordered the sh-s222 DVD from Amazon which I also was told works. If it doesn't I'll bite the bullet and but another DVD player/recorder. I have two vrdvd4005s so I can record a show in one room on a -RW and move the recorded DVD to the other player without having to go through a finalizing.

Mine had the same error. I replaced the drive with a standard computer DVD RW drive and it worked.

Hi, I went to walmart and bought a Lite-On 16X that uses either plus or minus blank Dvd's. It would not accept a plus Dvd but the minus 8X disks I had worked fine. Was even able to finalize a bunch of disks I had that wouldn't finalize before. I haven't tried a 16X minus blank yet (don't have any) but I bet it will record at 8X on that 16X blank just fine. If you do this make sure the new dvd burner is set as a master. Actually it only took about 20 minutes to swap out. Oh, $39.95 for the new Lite-On.

Everyone has this problem...the dvr fails completely over time. Don't bother with fixya.com...I wasted 10 bucks to be told that.

These are quirky machines. Mine has a Pioneer DVR 1060R pc recorder inside. Can't find one anywhere. Thought about just plugging in another brand but I suspect I'm throwing good money after bad. Another forum suggests that if you fill the disc up, it won't finalize. Warning - always try a disc in another player before erasing any material that you think you copied. I finally just trashed the Sansui and bought a Sony. More expensive but seems to work much better.

I just record a new disk, with out the movie selection menu. This addressed the problem. The first dvd had a screen which allow me to select audio or play movie, etc. How I go directly to the movie. No C104 error! Hope this helps.

I have the same problem, only on -R that I recorded on my computer. But major of the disks I record do play! I am going to try a different DVD computer record (Pioneer 105) presently I am using a Liteon. Will let you know what happens.
