Mend BT Voyager 210 Internet Connection Broadband

Bt Voyager 210?

Hi, lately my 210 loses DSL & INTERNET lights & if i'm in the middle of doing something on my comp it's frozen. Checked all connections/filters etc even had BT BROADBAND Engineer out & he couldn't find anything wrong BUT the prob still persists. If you just leave it alone for a bit it comes back on but its driving me nuts! I use the Ethernet connection on it if that helps anybody & not the USB connector.
Thanks

Thanks DaveSt !
I tried your tip, and it actually works. I saw a tip on another forum for getting the capacitors out . You heat both terminals of the capacitor with your sodering iron, while pulling the body of the capacitor out from the other side of the circuit board.

You can open it up (whilst disconnected!) by removing the four screws hidden under the stick on rubber feet. There are a couple of smoothing capacitors after a diode bridge close to the power input connector. If the tops of them are bulging, they've 'blown', and you'd be advised not to power the thing up until they're replaced. They shouldn't be expensive (about 25p each). If only one's gone, replace both! Their value is 1000uF, they're rated at 25V, and they have to go the CORRECT WAY AROUND! So take note before removing them... dangerous bang/explosion risk otherwise.

Replacement involves some de-soldering, and re-soldering. If you don't have such tools or experience, find out, or ask around.

For longer life of these routers (and plenty other stuff) turn it OFF when not in use. Some components, especially high voltage rated capacitors, have a MTBF "mean time before failure" of a few thousand hours... which isn't that long if you leave them on 24/7.

Lesson over!

Mine does the same thing, it's almost as if it's made to go wrong right after the eighteen month contract expires.

My BT ADSL line also was dropping out intermittently. Several calls to the BT help line and a visit from the BT engineer it was still dropping out, until I took the top off the box and added a old computer cooling fan..no problems with it now (and admittedly no warranty!)

There's a design fault on the 210 router. It runs very hot & causes some internal components to change value. After 12-months or so this heat related issue causes intermittent sync drop outs. It cured by cooling the router - turning it off - or blowing with fan or better - chucking it in the bin like I did and getting another router - but not a BT 210 router!!

I swapped the BT Voyager 210 for a Sagem 800 I had and the problem is resolved. I am still using the same rj11 and microfilter, I do suspect that the voyager was overheating and this was the cause of the fault. Reading through these posts and other forums it seems to be quite common.

I have the same problem and having looked at another thread it looks like the answer is the modem is overheating.

It could be the: 210, tour inte4rnal wiring, the Line, or thew DSLAM at the exchange. BT should fix it for you. If BT are failing to fix it write to Sir Michale Rake, Chairman, BT plc, 81 Newgate street, London EC1A 7AJ.
