my cd player skips Model NSX5200 can it be repaired?

I have the same exact unit and cleaning did not help so I tried to adjust the laser. On the back of the unit, you will see a silver screw towards the top and center of the unit. Grab a flashlight and look through the ventilation slots directly below the silver screw. You can see a small brown circuit board with two green connectors and an orange potentiometer (dial looking thing that has a phillips head impression in it) to the right of the connectors. Grab a long skinny screw driver and turn the pot a hair of a turn away from the original setting. After the small turn, start a CD up and gently tap on the side of the Aiwa unit to see if it still skips. My fix was to turn it less than 1/8 turn clockwise from the original setting. Any more than a 1/4 turn and the laser will not read the CD.

We were experiencing the same problem same Make and Model.

1. You can try a CD Laser Lens Cleaner Disc. I bought a Disc by Scotch 3M at Bartells drug for $6.99. You put that in one of the disc slots and operate that disc. It fully corrected my problem on our DVD player. Did not do it on our CD player. Radio Schack also sells them for $19.99 but did not try that and do not know if it is the same product or better.

2, Since it did not work for our Aiwa I removed the cover that is 1 piece that encloses the sides and top and pick it up a little in the back and it slides back or off. Then I extended the CD tray and unplugged the electrical cord from the wall receptacle.

3. I got Qtips and ISOPROPYL alcohol and reached in and cleaned the optical lens under the CD drive. Not easy but you can take a flashlight and shine under the disc drive and see a small glare with a light shining on it. That is it, clean it delicately and while the cover is off I tested it by replugging the cord and pushing on the CD tray Open/close button then a number button for the disc I had installed and it worked. "Do not use rubbing alcohol as it has lanolin which will leave a film on the lens."
4. After testing put the cover back on. It is not a difficult job to do this for anyone who can use a screwdriver and who can look at it and see what is involved and keep track of what they took apart and how it goes back together. Really simple. Good Luck!
