Mend Nissan Almera Only Working Setting 4

How can I fix an electric fan is only working on the highest setting of 4?

My car is a 1998 Nissan Almera 1400L. The electric fan is usually reliable, and I use it principally for de-misting, but it now only works on the highest setting of the 4 available. Can you suggest what may be wrong and how to fix it?

Thanks Folks,
I had the same problem so I bought the resistor pack today and fitted it myself. It was a bit tricky to find where to put it but hope this information will help others.

Remove the two pins that the glove box pivots on, then the glove box comes out easily.

You will then see the wires that lead to the resistor pack.
You won't be able to see the resistor pack but you will be able to touch it.

Remove the 2 cross head screws and you will be able to pull gently on the cables until the old pack drops out.
You need to remove the pack to be able to take the connector out.

Then it is just a matter of plugging the connector into the new pack and putting it back in place.

At this point you could check that it is working before replacing the two screws that hold the resistor pack in place.

Finally replace the glove box in the closed position and replace the two pins that the glove box pivots on.

This problem seems to be very common to Almeras! I had the same problem some time ago. No dismantling needed. You need to go on the passanger's side, under dashboard, behind glovebox, center right. (this prob. slightly different on left hand drive) You'll be able to see a set of wires connected upwards (coming from the fan motor). That's the fan speed control card the wires are connected into. You can only see a couple of screws, one on each side. Unscrew and pull out. Replace and that's it. I got mine from dismantlers for £7.50

I have the same problemwith my own '98 almera. The guy in the garage parts dept. reckonsthe problem is a resistor pack mounted near the motor, something in this burns out but can be soldered. A new part would cost in the region of €80 here in Ireland. I have yet to go poking to see for myself, but that's likely to be the problem as the dash switch tested fine on all points.
