Thanks-a-million for the tips on how to: repair the glove compartment

Invisibly mended (- due to following tips!)

Only 1 side of lock mechanism broke. But decided to repair both at the same time with washers

Used duck tape - while glue dried

Repaired glove compartment in 30mins flat!

Who said girls can't fix things!

brilliant!!! lokks like VW have a habitt of doing this with cheap plastic clips had same problem with clip in window. if the clip does not fit back on just put small screw in pilot hole job done 15mins

Great advice,
thanks tis a pitty the white fittings inside are only held in place by a bit of melted plastic, which will fail every time.
A small screw with washer did the trick, also be brave when prizing the two covers apart, as its joined by small plastic welds.

I tried using this method to fix the glovebox but I have a slight problem...

for some reason the one that actually fell off initally (on the left) is still giving me problems.

When I want to close the glovebox it wont just close I have to push very firmly on the left side, where as the right side is perfectly fine.

I havent glued the lid back on yet...Any ideas?

I have just carried out this same repair - the plastic lugs wear out on the mk4 glovebox and the white levers shown in the vwvortex forum posting by dan fall off. However I strongly suggest you remove the centre consol and then the glovebox assembly so that you can get proper access to the lid - otherwise you will score and mark the plastic, if you aint worried about destroying the plastic then steam ahead but the final finish will look much better if you do the job properly.

Remount the white angled levers and use a small self tapping screw with a washer to prevent the levers falling off again (do this on both lugs) Make sure you use a plastic epoxy resin to re-glue.

tell you what this is absolutely a great link. the garages wont tell you about this because they want a couple of hours labour doin work thats pointless.
your lock barel isnt broke. its crappy plastic mechainsm inside.

for golf mkIV (mk4) and similar cars that have the same glove box the front of the glove box does come off as stated in the link above.
it is glues and you will here snapping sound but be brave and carry on. you were gonna spend 70 quid a new one anyway!
the cover does completely come off if you keep going and it makes the job easier.
the only complicated bit to this repair is gluing the cover back on.
you'll need the right kind of epoxy glue and some clamps, but even with that included you end up with a stronger glove lid mechanism and save £100 at least.

Cheers guys. This fix works really well. Thanks a million as this has saved me hours of effort dismantling the centre console to get the glovebox out and fit the replacement part. Instead it took 20 minutes (I had the same problem with the failed lug - actually put a screw in the other one too in case that fails in the future). I can now take the spare part I bought back to the dealer and get my £65 back. Result!

THIS IS A FAULT ON THIS MODEL, DONT BUY A NEW GLOVE BOX, WHAT HAPPENS IS THE LUG INSIDE THE LID HAS BROKEN,
I REPAIRED THIS BY PRIZING OPEN THE LID ALONG THE FRONT EDGE WITH A 2 INCH PAINT SCRAPER NOT THE CHEAP FLIMSY ONES, IF YOU WORK YOUR WAY ALONG THE WHOLE BIT WILL SEPARATE YOU WILL HEAR A CRACKING NOISE WHERE IT WAS BONDED TOGETHER, WHAT I DID WAS TO DRILL THROUGH EACH LUG ( A SMALL DRILL) AND USED A NUT AND BOLT THROUGH TO THE INSIDE OF THE GLOVE BOX USING A COUPLE OF WASHERS AND NYLOCK NUTS, YOU WILL SEE AS SOON AS YOU OPEN IT UP, THEN YOU HAVE TO GLUE IT BACK TOGETHER USING ARALDITE EXPOXY RESIN NOT THE RAPID AS THIS SETS TOO QUICK, A COUPLE OF G CLAMPS TO HOLD IT TOGETHER WHILE IT SETS 16 HOURS. OTHERS SAY REMOVE WHOLE OF GLOVE BOX WITH PART OF CENTRE CONSOLE THIS IS NOT REQUIRED AT ALL. THERE ARE NO SCREWS TO REMOVE EITHER ..
