how to wire up a light fitting from scratch?

hi have just taken old ceiling light of wich had three wires the new light only has 2 where do i put third wire plz

hi I am having problems re connecting my kitchen light,when I have fitted my new light to the cieling it does not switch on at the switch, there are 4 red ,4 black and 3 green wires the 4 red are fixed together, 1 black is single and 3 blacks together, i have checked the red and black in the switchen and the cieling and the are the live and nuteral but my switch seams to have no power can you help

I have disconnected my ceiling light and I am not sure how to connect it back again. I have 2 cables with red, black & earth. 1 cable with 2 red 1 earth and 1 cable with 1 black can you help?

just about to change a light fitting - taken off from ceiling and there is one green and yellow wire and about 6 black wires ?

Martin,
Keith is describing the loop in wiring system,
Keith, firstly connect all of the red wires together(permanant supply), then connect the black wires from power in & power out ,these are the neutrals, the black wire left from the switch wire is the switch live , this needs a red marker on it to indicate that it becomes live when switched.
So the light light fitting connects as follows,
Brown - sw live (black with red marker)
blue - to black(the 2 black wires -neutral)
Earth - green/yellow (if fitted)

IF ITS COMING OFF A RING MAIN U WILL HAVE TO USE A FUSED SPUR CONNECTION AND FUSE IT WITH A 3 OR 5 AMP FUSE DEPENDIN ON WATTAGE OF LIGHT FITTING , LIGHTS NORMALLY ON RADIAL CIRCUIT FROM CONSUMER UNIT WITH DEDICATED FUSE 6AMP NORM.
