I flipped over the primary belt to get a better grip on the motor shaft and reversed the clutch plate.
Works like a charm now....no $$$ out of pocket.

I followed the Youtube guide which is excellent. I found that the clutch can be dis-assembled and the top most plate flipped over to give a working clutch again( the original side had worn smooth). Probably worth a shot if you've got that far.

here is a you tube video on how to replace the entire clutch mechanism including the two belts. looks like the easy way to do it is buy the entire clutch assembly which comes with two belts.
