How can I replace my fuse in a Sharp Carousel II Microwave Oven?

I think my fuse has blown in a Sharp Carousel II Microwave R-5A83 Oven. It happened before and a friend changed it for me. they are no longer available to help. Where is the fuse located and are there any pitfalls to replacing the fuse? All time and LED indicators are out also.

My Microwave Sharp carousel II stopped working, no lights. Last time it happened a technician came and replaced the fuse. I just can not find how to open the panel where the fuse is located.

I've actually just read another article written by licensed repairmen who all said they use specific ceramic fuses of a very high rating and they are not available at the usual sources (radio shack, tandy, Dick Smith etc) but sourced via the manufacturer.

More importantly, they all said it was an extremely dangerous job for the untrained as, even with all power off, they can hold enough current to kill you and there's a specific way to 'bleed' them first.

Most also said that usually it's a sign the magnatron is on it's way out (which is why they blow) and they are an extremely expensive item.

I'd look into it a bit further before just ripping it out (maybe ask a service centre for a price which should tell you how easy or otherwise the job is).

Once you have disconnected it from the power and verified that it is disconnected, the toughest part is looking at the case and removing the screws to the case. The case normally slides out after removing the screws and you'll see the fuse. If you have a good multi-meter, use it to test the fuse after pulling it out with a pair of pliers. The fuse is normally 20 amps, but could be a 15 amp. Take the old fuse to a local source (Radio Shack carries microwave fuses); the letters and size on the fuse need to match what you buy. I usually slide the case into place but not screw it back on, plug the unit back in and get a cup of water to test the operation. I can't emphasize enough the need to kill all power. I am not familiar with this exact model, but everyone I have worked on (10 or 15) are basically the same. The fuse is almost always behind the control panel, and the trouble I have found is deciding how to slide the cover off and getting the right screws removed without removing the wrong ones. Good luck.
