Mend Vauxhall Corsa Suspension

vauxhall corsa suspension?

My Corsa is 3 years old. Just passed its first MOT and had 2 new tyres on the front and the tracking adjusted. Since this, my front suspension seems very low and there does not seem to be much reaction in the shock absorbers (front). Is it possible that the garage (Kwik Fit) did something wrong when they jacked the car up for the tyre change? The off side is an inch lower than the kerb side.

06 Corsa with 19k local miles - 800 gentle miles since last service no noticeable effect on handling then service at kwik-fit today and both front coils broken. With a mandatory alignment, resulting bill is a sting. It does seem these coils are a truly weak component. Had Corsa cars since 92 but will not get another...

Brakes are horrid, Very similar to the Nova SR I used to have only minus the dangerous one sided calliper lock, they still
warp very easily even under normal driving. I think they changed them to ventilated and ABS on the 03 models I guess thats why.
Gear change horrid, 1st and 2nd esp just like the Nova, even with the new gear linkage which was replaced at 70,000
New drivers side coil spring for this years MOT, last year it was the rear coil, front bearing also replaced along with both driveshaft which I finally after being an advisory on the last four years MOTS.
Front suspension drivers side knocking / rattle over bumps etc
a great car

Another unhappy person.
Corsa sxi. Just gone in for 2nd MOT. Yep you guessed it, front nearside coil spring broken, bit missing.
This car has not even done 30000 miles. Not been over any potholes and take speed humps very slowly.
Really not happy

I don't know about Corsa, but I've just found out that my front coil springs have broken on my Signum(2 springs) and it has only done 29000mls.
This is ridiculous, and ludicrous they should last as long as the rest of the car. They are a steel spring, manufactured to give way to bumps and jolts, thats why they are coil springs and no way on earth should they break unless the are made to break intentionly .If not then they should all be recalled and replaced with real coil springs which are made to exacting engineering standards where the steel is tempered at the optimum temperature thereby giving it the strength quality to do the job it's supposed to do!

Hi all,

Just got back from Kwik Fit this lunch time, had the car (04 reg, 50k miles) in for new front tyres. Got a call earlier from the kwik fit guys saying both front coil springs have snapped right at the end, the nearside ball joint is gone and I need both ball joints, both suspension arms and the springs replacing. Rubbish. Is this reasonable wear and tear?

53 plate Corsa 1.2 3-door, 22k, owned from new. Burst front offside tyre. Unable to get (locking) wheel nut off, so called AA. He noticed car was dipping that corner then informed us the coil spring had broken and dropped, rubbing against inner side of tyre till it went bang! Thankfully happened at low speed.

Fed up.

when my daughters vauxhall corsa 04 is bounced around at the back there is no noise but when we drive over a hump its noisy also when driving there is a noise from the rear. please help

My 04 Corsa Sri 1.8 has just snapped it's o/s/f spring. I think the problem may be related to the very poor road surfaces we have to suffer in the UK but also the stupidly over-aggressive road humps used by local authorities and shopping centre managers to slow traffic down. They are an absolute menace and should be prohibited by law !

My 51 corsa has been verty good for past two years, although I have had some things replaced due to age, the coil springs went last year, also the wishbone both sides this year. Kwik Fit have been my garage of choice for past three services and they have been helpful and I feel genuine in the repairs needing done. Someone knocked into my wing mirror recently and vauxhall were charging 300 to fix it, Kwik Fit charged 20 to fix it and I bought the part from mirror man for 50. The car is in at the moment due to a sreeching sound when starting and braking..... will keep people posted how this does.... Also I would like to say in respons eto the guy who suggested that women should not go alone to Kwik Fit cos they will get ripped off (cos they know nothin about cars?) come around to the 21st century please

I need some help. Just about to put some 17" alloys on my 04 corsa sxi, does anyone have any recommendations for what brand & type of suspension i should go for, i dont want to lower the car if possible though because i had them on to make sure they fit etc and they look a pretty close fit as is? I have a Y reg and a 02 reg Corsa Comfort 1.7Di which I use as driving tuition cars. The 02 reg has done 190,000 miles and the Y reg has done 270,000 miles. Both are still fitted with their original engines, gearboxes and clutches despite having been driven by learners for virtually all their life. The rural roads in my area of Central Scotland are full of potholes so I have had to replace about 3 or 4 broken springs on each car over the years which I don't think is too bad. They both return about 55 mpg and apart from new tyres, brakes and cv joints from time to time they have both been virtually trouble free. When the springs do break they are cheap and easy to replace so I've got no complaints at all!

Happy Bunny!

I have just bought a Corsa sxi 02 plate - now I wished I hadn't after reading all these. It failed it's mot on a worn coil spring, that was supposedly replace but when I go over a hump in the road there is a nasty grinding/grating sound from the driver side. Sounds like it's the panel. I only got it Friday, I checked the mot history and found there had been problems with these springs in past mot failures. Also the indicator switch is dodgy. It cancels and then immediately switched on the opposite indicator, anyone else got this problem?

My 03 corsa sxi done 50,000 . Had 6 months. MOT due in march needs Steering Rack, Front Disks, Pads, Rear Shoes and Brake cylinders. HandBrake cable has stretched. New Rear coil Spring and tyre. Thats what I know it needs. Will see if it needs any thing else when i take it for an MOT

Doesnt appear to just be 52 plate corsas with this problem, I just had my 54 plate corsa in for mot today and guess what it failed on.........front coil spring snapped, god knows when it happened! Although, for a while there was a rattle from the drivers front wheel! Cost £164 to have both replaced at nationwide autocentre! Im getting rid, this is just an addition to a long list of recent problems with this car!

My 54 plate Corsa SXi 1.2 has done 66,000 mles. The other day after a long period of very cold weather and heavy snow I set off and heard a loud droning noise from the front offside tyre for a couple of hundred yards. I thought it was probably ice caught up between the yre and the wheel arch. The noise then stopped but the suspension vibrated over a change in road surface. Something metalic then fell off the car and the front offside tyre blew out. I called the AA and found the tyre looked like it had been attacked with a can opener. The coil spring had broken and ripped throught the side wall. Luckily I wasn't travelling very fast at the time.

just came from home holiday in tenerife on xmas night. car had been sitting for a week in airport car park covered in snow and freezing temperatures. defrosted car then 2 minutes after driving away from airport heard a massive bang and the sound of something metal rolling down the street. continued driving down motorway at 70 mph then car started shaking violently, pulled over on hard shoulder just in time. front tyre mangled and coil spring snapped. 87 pound to join green flag at roadside then 55 to get towed home. merry xmas vauxhall!!! am not looking forward to the repair bill!!!

If you live in the Merseyside area go to Mersey Springs, Bootle, they can repair or provide re-conditioned springs.
I went there years ago for leaf springs. We are rapidly becoming replacement part merchants and do no repair or re-condition many parts, i.e. alternators, stater motors etc. Big garages are no more than these type of replacement places not really skilled in mechanics.

Save your money you people! If you can change a tyre then you can change those rear coiled springs, I have found out this today. Daughter and I went to scrap yard and had a practice on a similar corsa to hers. Spring was only a fiver and took wheel off at home and undone one bolt that goes through the lower part of damper, old broken spring just about fell out... Held down wheel hub and inserted the scrap yard spring, jacked up the wheel hub to put back in the bolt. Wheel on, away you go! It is *That* easy!

Took my 52 reg Corsa to a garage for an MOT on Monday, the car had been in 6 weeks earlier for an Mot and failed on handbrake and tyre. got these put right but did not take the car back until a couple of days ago. The car has not moved since last failed Mot. Now garage failed it on the rear spring. I got someone else to do the work for £50 instead of the £100 quoted by the garage. I have the spring in the house, this spring has DEFINITELY had a grinder at it. Been back to the garage 3 times and brought this up but the owner is out all the time. Where do I go from here. Any help greatly appreciated

I own a 2001 corsa and have also had my gear linkage pack-in and recently exactly two months ago had to have a full set of tappets renewed at a local HONEST garage. Another garage on a trading estate tried to say it was the timing belt! His words were:we donot like going inside an engine it gets a bit messy! This made me a bit confused why is he running a garage? Four other people had said it was The TAPPETS. As the other owners it was a noise that made my car sound like a lawnmower, not straight away after the car had been warmed up after about 10 mins. It is now starting to use a bit of oil the mechanic today said just to keep on topping it up. The tappetts packed in because oil levels had been left to go low but I was always taking it to that garage on the trading estate that was when the problems started with my car! Anyones comments please?VAUXHALL sort your cars OUT! Never had this much trouble with the NOVA!

Had my Corsa Comfort (02 reg - but it's only done 42k) - MOT'd last week, failed on two broken coil springs, simply do not understand this - the guy said I must drive over speed bumps to hard (I do not) - I've never hit it hard on a kerb or bump. I am the only one that drives it. I've had it two years, no massive problems - only ever had to have the handbrake fixed (twice) ..This is going to cost 110 pounds, not a huge amount, but just suprised on what it failed on!

Just had a similar problem with a 54 plate Corsa 1.2 - 21000 miles. The driver side front spring was broken & took out the tyre.
I am an engineer & look after over 60 vehicles mainly VW,Toyota, ford & M B I cannot remember a front spring breaking in the last 10 years or so, some reps vehicles do 30k a year & some VW's have done over 120k no problem. On inspecting the Corsa spring it was evident the break had been there some time as the fracture was rusty - but no rust anywhere else, approx 50cm had been lost from the bottom end of the spring. The driver had just crossed some severe speed bumps. I could find no fault with the strut or mountings, so would suggest the spring failed due to a manufacture defect and then the suspension travelled its maxium going over the bumps, caused it to jump out of the locating plate lug, then drop down the strut & cut the tyre.
The original post - if both springs were broken, jacking the car up would have a similar effect.
Not a difficult job to repair but have not used Vauxhall parts (spring cost £29). Also check the tracking when re built

My Corsa (03 plate, 49,000 miles) had it's MOT a few weeks back and failed on the handbrake and the CB (?) joints on the front drivers side, had everything repaired (£400) and got it through its MOT.
Took it for a full service today (not my normal garage due to price) and within 5 minutes of it being there they had rung me to say that the coil springs, both back and front were broke and the suspension had compeltely gone, were it to have an MOT it would fail and is not driveable. Have asked them not to do anything other than the service as they want to charge me at least a further £200 which I can't afford. The mechanic who did the MOT has assured me that had he thought the suspension/coils etc were gone/going he would have also failed it on that, but he didn';t notice anything out of the ordinary, so in the short space of time all ths springs have gone!!!!

i have an 03 plate Corsa and i was driving out of my local co-op and i heard a big bang come from the right wheel i thought nothing of it as my tires looked ok. The next day i got in it and my front right wheel is starting to make a clangging noise i never had this problem with my 51 plate. Reading that everyone else has had the same problem something really needs to be done about this its quite dangerous.

My corsa May 2006 . Failed 1st mot front suspension mount rubbers. Only 23k on clock and fully serviced b/f mot by vauxhaul. Holiday w/end and no car. I have asked garage to contact Vauxhaul for good will. I will also appeal MOT tester as garage say they are to harsh.
MOT stations need a shake up as they have a licence to print money. If you can be bothered appeal every failure regardless then they might be honest

I've been watching this forum since I found it via Google in Jan 08 when my Corsa failed its MOT because both front coil springs had broken.

I was ruddy livid as my car had only done 13,000 miles.

I phoned Vauxhall to complain, only to be fobbed of by their call centre in Canada!!!!!!

To add insult to injury, I got into my car this morning and before I even started the car, a loud bang came from the rear end and when I got out to see what had happened, I found two broken pieces of the rear coil spring in the driveway.

So this is now the 3rd one that gone!

I'll never buy another Vauxhall car again.

Just had my rear (passenger side) suspension spring go, while stationary at some lights. Not sure if its the car or the roads, moved recently & the roads here are much rougher & there are LOADS of speed bumps compared with none where I came from (Never had problems before, 51 plate)
The good thing about the Corsa suspension is it corners nice and flat, which is great for the roads I came from which were smooth but windy. Bad thing is its waaaay too hard for here where its all rough :(

BAR - good job they did check for it when changing the tyres as this is a common problem with them especially on the front. The broken spring bursts the tyres usually.

NB: Got my car back and the bill was £451.00 - I'm not a happy bunny. Just qualifying as a Nurse so as soon as I get my first wage packet I shall be treating myself to a new car!

i own a Vauxhall corsa 00 plate not had to spend much money on it at all since i bought it 3 years ago but have heard a rattling noise coming from the front right tyre for about 6 months - 3 different garages have looked at it and all said they cant find any noise. Today i had my front tyres replaced and decided while the tyres where off to have a quick look and there it was a broken spring only the bottom coil had broken thankfully but still something which should have lasted which i now need to replace.

My rear (I think!) suspension has gone along with the handbrake. My 90k service is going to cost me in excess of £350 which is on top of the £2,000(!!!!) I spent on it last year. Just waiting for the garage to phone so I can go and pick it up. I have an 03 Corsa 1.7dti SXI. It had a new fuel pump module and a new electrical control unit along with something else at the start of the year its 80k service. I look after my car and have it serviced yearly and this is how it repays me. Really disheartened with my Corsa and won't be getting another one. All the problems I've had with it seem to be common problems which I've realised since reading this thread. I've heard bad reports about the new shape Corsa as well, in particular the gear box so I definitely won't be buying a new one!

well so much for corsas ive had a belly full , im waiting to have a engine put in im not waisting my money having the timing chain replaced because it only lasts about 6 months app and your back to square 1 and its not cheap to have done ,my car only done 52,000 miles so shouldnt be having it replaced yet to be honest .it sounds like a diesel on a cold day its awful , ive had nothing but trouble with the oil sensor switch ,gear linkage ,springs, and timing chain ,it seems never ending . we should all write to vauxhall to get some results , im going to write ill let you all know whats said

my 04 corsa suspension coil broke at the drivers side front, i had a complete collapse which caused a puncture. Got the two front springs replaced locally but the mechanic did comment on how stiff the car seemed, i agree with him and i think the problem is made worse by the low profile tyres fitted to my corsa but the springs obviously have a rusting problem as i found a piece of spring with rust on it outside my house later. It is obviously a badly made part of the corsa as the car had only done 30k, very disappointing vauxhall.

Hi all unhappy corsa owners. Just to let you know that I have just contacted Vauxhall and informed them of the many many people who are having similar problems. I will post the message that they send to me in relation to all the concerns I have raised through either personal experience or from what I have read on this site and others. Here's hoping that we get some positive feedback, if not - we enter into plan B.

It's me again! The garage disconnected my car battery and now I have no radio! Despite numerous attempts to get the code to display in order to input the code number- no joy! Apparently, this is part of the security system within the car. Well, it's so damned secure that the owner can't access it either! Does anyone have any ideas? Does anyone know who actually designed this model and was he of this planet? It must have been male - 'Corsa it was!' ha ha!

I am the unfortunate owner of a 52 corsa elegance. I have had to have the gear linkage replaced twice in 5 months and every coil snapped at the same time. The garage told me it's a common problem with this model. I feel as though I am driving something close to a 'flintstone mobile!' In fact, a flintstone mobile would probably feel more comfortable. I really feel that Vauxhall should recall these models and compensate us all. I don't feel happy about selling it to anyone as I wouldn't have the heart to render them with the problems and expense I have had. I think we should do something positive and contact Vauxhall. I have read many many complaints about corsa's. Please get back to me.

My father in law has a 52 plate Corsa - only done 37k miles driven by a wrinkly, but front off side coil spring just snapped for no reason. looks like a fault in manufacture - rust around 30% across the fracture, symptomatic of a problem in the steel, then propagating due to excess stress on the rest of the cross section. We will be trying to claim from Vauxhall.

Well I have a 2000 'W' plate Corsa B and it's still on it's original coil springs. I had the front suspension struts replaced in the summer (at 110,000 miles...not bad going) and the mechanic said the springs had lots of life left in them. Defo sounds like there's a bad batch of coils in the 52 plate Corsas. Same story with 03 Megane wiper motors...dodgy batch from the supplier.

Don't be too harsh on Kwik Fit. I know they used to be on the fiddle most of the time but I think things have improved a bit. Kwik Fit did my front struts for £115 using Monroe parts. Not a bad price at all. The cheapest I could have got the struts was £80-£95 and then I would have to do the job myself which from past experience is a pain in the 'arris. Kwik Fit use decent materials like Mintex brake pads and Mobil oil. Mind you it might be different in other towns I dunno. One tip for lady readers.....don't turn up to any service garage on your own 'cus the mechanics will be rubbing their hands and ringing the missus to buy some steak for tea that night.

I too have a 2002 model corsa Comfort. Last year both front coil springs had to be replaced to pass its mot. this year both rear coil springs now need replacing. So annoying! I have just been told by my Vauxhall garage that both coil springs have broken on my 2002 Corsa Comfort. It failed its MOT. Rather an expensive addition to the annual service! Explanation - which I accepted, the state of the roads and the speed bumps in car parks. How come our 16 year old Sierrha never had any problems with its suspension I wonder? We Corsa drivers do seem to be setting a trend.....
I do not know how to "mend it" but suggest we all lobby our local councillors to get the roads into a better state of repair!

Check your coil springs, mine on a 52 plate has just failed its mot on both rear coil springs having snapped. The shock absorbers do not affect the ride height as the front suspension on a corsa is of the macpherson strut type, and has coil springs which determine the height. I would have it checked at a proper garage. I personally always use a small local garage that is well established, and not one of the "Fast Fit" centres that are only interested in selling you the easy bits like tyres, exhausts, shockers, brakes, etc. most of which your car would probably not really need anyway.
