Reebok i-run - sparks/burning from inside motor?

Hi,

Wondering if you can help at all.

I recently decided to buy a second hand treadmill. The treadmill is a reebok i-run and was only manufactured in April 2007. It was working fine and I used it about 4-5 times since I bought it at the end of December.

Today it didn't start straight away but when I eventually got it going I could see some kind of sparks coming from the inside the motor/fan. Obviously there was also a slight burning smell.

Wondered if anyone could help me out. Do you have any Idea what the problem could be and how much I'm looking for repair bill? I've just paid £180 for it and feel a bit of a mug.

Thanks for any advice/help on this matter.

I neglected to lubricate the running deck, so paid the price. The treadmill would stop mid run, then the problem got worse - acrid burning smell and then running at full speed blowing fuses and tripping electrics.

I resolved the fuse issue and treadmill stopping etc by replacing the motor control board (£50 from eBay treadmill doctor). I lubricated the deck as advised, but had poor torque and still the burning smell after a few mins. I think my remaining issue is worn brushes, mines are pitted. So, new ones on order from expert fitness for the greenmaster.. Hopefully that will be the end of my problems!

Hi all
yes the brushes need to b replaced
they ae 17x7 mm in size
went to my local electrical motor rewins shop and got a pair which were for a makita hamme drill
detail on box MASTER 30-00-203(cb-203) (LP53)

cost 30 euro, should be possible to get cheeper.

actual size was 18 x 7 mm so i had to file them to size
very easy, took bout 5 min, then rechamferred the sides
not for the total amature

unscrew plastic caps

then vaccd out as much of old dust as possible and fitted new ones, they should slide in without binding and should not be sloppy either

replace caps

perfect now

I have owed this Treadmill for approximately two years and only used it about twenty times and mine now does not work, a new motor Greenstar GMD 118-1 will cost you £135, i have just replaced mine and lubricated all the Runners but the problem still exists with the Running Belt coming to a sudden stop ten minutes into an exercise, Sell it / Get rid of it or risk it catching Fire to your Home!

Hi

It sounds like the brushes have worn out on the motor, which can happen if the belt has not been lubricated often enough, this produces a lot more friction and the motor works harder and therefore wears out the brushes sooner due to arcing and general wear and tear. I am also looking for some brushes for a TR2 which has worn out the brushes in the motor and this exibited the same symtoms as yours has, sparks and smell... also not always working.

To find out remove the cover over the motor after you unplug it from the mains, then look at the motor and it will have 2 plastic sloted covers oposite each other on the motor, unscrew these and remove the metal sprung brushes and inspect them, if one or both are worn down then this is your problem, the next problem is trying to obtain replacements... good luck and let me know at andymcj@hotmail.com if you have any luck.

I have contacted Reebok and they have stated that the warranty was 2 years for parts & labour (to the original buyer) but because it was bought second hand the warranty is void.

Where can I buy replacement motors?

Thanks.

Mr. French - any excessive sparking combined with an acrid burning smell means that the motor is heading for the great repair shop in the sky...sorry. A new motor is needed, but I think your machine will still be under some sort of warranty, irrespective if you bought it new or not.
