cavalier alternator?

when driving my cavalier(1.6 K reg 1993) at night the lights dimmed,wipers slowed and then engine stopped,the charging light was not illuminated.I got towed home and fitted a new battery then fitted another alternator which is a delco remy.Now the charging light and handbrake lights are illuminated and the alternator doesn't appear to be charging.Any ideas what the problem is or have i fitted a faulty alternator?
