renault megane 53. keeps cutting out. help please?

I have a renault megane 1.6 53 plate. Most (95%) of the time when i start the engine it keeps cuttimg out and does so every time i take my foot off the gas pedal. This keeps up until the engine has warmed up. Not sure if this is an electrical fault or not. I have had all 4 coil packs changed under the warrenty, but this didn't help. And now the warrenty company tell me they can't help me anymore.

I had the same problem and swapped round all the sensors from an identical car but still no good ?
So I removed the inlet an found it was full of oil ?! So I cleaned out the inlet and the throttle body and re - fitted the lot.
Problem solved for me !

Hi everyone!

I had the problem with my Megane 53 reg, petrol 1.6 16V, sorted out really easily! There were really never ending theories of the camshaft position sensor, TDC sensor, dephaser pulley (once this one wears off it does need to be changed without a doubt). I had visited a number of mechanics in the UK and they all wanted to change all the above! It was a never ending story! Ultimately I decided to take the car to Poland where mechanics not only don't rip one off money but do the job! And they did!! The engine cutting off on the start, or chocking for 2-3 seconds on the start and coming back the normal idle afterwards, has appeared to be an issue with the gaskets on the air inlet manifold. There is a set set of four small rectangular gaskets, plus one really big and flat made like of a mixture of carton board and metal, plus big and small throttle o-ring! The cost of the gaskets was about £30 plus whatever having them fitted was! One of the gaskets was so perished that when the mechanics opened up the inlet system, it fell apart! The car is running perfectly now and the economy was 47 mpg on the way to work at 50mph. It took me a while and some money to finally get there but it was worth it! My "French twat", as I named it because of its resistance to being repaired, is working like a brand new one! No drivelling about expensive repairs any more! It is worth having the inlet system thoroughly cleaned as well before putting it back together! Good luck with your Meganes - I adore mine! :-)

I have a problem with megane 2 1.9dci the engine start well but its and drive well wen the engine gets warm it start to cut and its very annoyingr plz help

My 1999 megane 1600 scenic petrol was starting ok and as soon as it warmed up..it was ticking over high or hunting..eventually I could only drive along with my foot just resting on the peddle or it would start juddering.it appears not under the bonnet when it breaks down even the the temp gauge showed ok...turned out to be a coil pack overheating as it was breaking down...

Hi I'm new to this!I bout a megane 04 16 16v and it has the same story !I replaced almost every thing elec and its stil doing the same?do u guys think if I replaced the vvt pully it wil fixc my problem?I had it on obdll and gives me an error 0340 camshaft sensor circuit tooth event intermittent !please guys give me advice

I have the same problem with my 03 megane 1.6... changed cam sensor, crankshaft sensor and the Dephasor Sensor, still cutting out and will not idle, if we unplug the dephasor sensor unit the car runs fine, but as soon as its plugged back in it will not idle.

Any one any ideas

Had my megane a wk and first off key card is short of useless and today the third day of driving it it decides to cut out every time I had to slow down the previous 2 days it drove fine maybe a bit sluggish but idled fine and didn't cut out
Can anyone help?

another 'easy and cheap' thing to try for stuttering and cutting out sort of stuff, buy some redex or equivalent and pour it into a fullish fuel tank...it'll clean out your jets and might remedy the problem. worth a go for £5, and anyway, even if it doesn't fix problem, at least your jets will be clean...

The TDC sensor is easy to sort out. Mine cut out, wouldn't start...towed home. Went on a forum..easily unbolted and disconnected the TDC sensor, cleaned it up, put back...sorted..no problem since. Don't buy new 'til you've tried this

My megane I just bought it.when I start the car.noise come from the pully belt.just been repla ed.still cuts of starting and when I pres to start,idle drops down. What the problem can someone direct me to rght direction thx

hi i need help am so confused i have a megan 53 1.6 petrol my milage is only 60 and I've just bought thecae when i start the car the rev gage goes down and the car cuts out unless i rev it now my engine light has come on and the car begins to shake what should i do please help .

I have a 2009 Scenic Dynamique vvt 1.6: same problem and had cam sensor and cam belt replaced under warranty - fine for 1 week then same problem but no "check emissions" light - worst when engine cold, or when reached operating temp. then parked for short time and restarted - back for more warranty work this week. Don't see how Renault make a profit on these things, but its Jap Crap for me from now on!

I had a similar problem with my 03 plate 1.6 megane II, it would start fine but and run ok when cold, it was while it was between cold and hot that it would stall if I took my foot of the gas. I did some research on the megane owners forum and tried the suggestion which was to replace the cam sensor. I bought a new one on ebay and with my trusty haynes manual the part was duly replaced and the fault cued.

I have had to replace all the pencil coils over time and again these are cheap enough on ebay and easy to replace yourself - you just use a process of elimination to locate the faulty coil. Faulty coil packs are not a problem specific to renault cars, these are made by valeo - I beleive the latest generation of these with a green top are much improved.

Now I have the very noisy engine for a few seconds during start up, I know from previous posts this is the dephaser pulley!, this job may be a bit beyond me...

its not just the cam belt you need to change the Dephaser i just got quoted £735.00p thats more than i paid for the heap of crap :(

I have an 05 plate megane, have had the coils changed and just yesterday the cam belt, also had the carborator cleaned and the engine management system updated. The misfiring is still there and now in fact worse when idling, constantly revving the engine to stop it cutting out! Now been told to get the lambda sensor replaced to sort the problem.....

Will never buy a renault again... heap of crap!!!

Hi.

I've had exactly the same problem!

My Megane 1.6 16V dynamique (2003) is having the camshaft pulley replaced today!

It has already had the camshaft sensor and entire coil pack replaced.

I don't know if it is a coincidence but i have only recently (July) had the cambelt changed.

Hopefully when I get my car back the problem will be solved but i am seriously considering part exchanging for something more reliable.

My Megane, also on a 53 plate keeps cutting out. This morning it finally gave up on me, Greenflag came to tow it to the garage but he told me it's the camshaft sensor positioning.
The "Toxic Fume Filter" warning light and "Service" light had came on 5days ago but I was told it needed a new battery and the faulty electrics had just triggered the warning light. This didn't rectify the problem as I didn't even need a new battery.
So now I'm just waiting to hear how much I owe...... :-\
Pile of French Shite, never again am I buying another Renault!! I'd rather walk :-))))

my 1.4 2000 y rattles when cold and dont run properly till warm is this the phaser ?? also engine seems rocky but engine monting on right and left seem ok helppppppppppppppp

Speak to your local renault dealer and ask for a price on a cam sensor. I had exactly the same problem with mine (1.6VVT 16 valve 53 plate), and i mean exactly! infact, if id have wrote my problem on here myself i would have worded it the same as yours! i paid £37.95 for the part inc vat and problem solved! My other half fitted mine though so if you dont knwo anyone to do it you will have to pay for the labour. good luck!

i had the same problem, it looked to be under reving and after about 8seconds it kept cutting out (until warmed up or foot was on gas)... i took mine (1.6 53 plate) to the local evans halshaw.. and it cost me 650 to fix :O.... because they had to chnage a sensor that was sitting underneath the cam belt....

I had a problem with my 2000 1.4 Megane in that it would often fail to start, During an MOT 2 years ago the examiner asked if I had trouble starting the car to which I said yes to. He put his hand on the TDC sensor as the engine was running and the engine started to cut out for second and then ran OK.
It has never failed to start since then but I have had to replace two of the ignition packs.
He said the TDC sensor is the common problem for failure to start.

i have a similar problem with my 03 megane. in addition i have an intermittent problem which can stop for weeks then return. the problem is similar to misfiring but the emission management light flashes? the engine holds back and causes a slight shudder to the car?

My daughter has had a problem with her 03 reg megane 1.6i cabrio. The garage have replaced the lambda sensor (£50 + fitting) and the car runs and idles a lot smoother. The lambda sensor measures the air fuel mixture off the exhaust and helps the ECU to provide correct air fuel mix. Another problem that occurred was the temp guage shooting upto max temp so the temperature sensor has been replaced (£23 + fitting) So hopefully the car should be ok now.

Im afriad its the dreaded dephaser pulley operation for you. I had exactly same problem on my 53 plate meagne 1.6 i bought it in April this year and had it in the gararge 8 times in 3 months. Had various things changed from coil packs, tdc sensor, temp sensor, camshaft sensor, throttle valve cleaned out and couple of other things. It wont show up on diagnostic as well as there is no electrical part to it its all mechanical. Once depshaser pulley has been replaced and timed with the engine all ya problems will go. Fortunately i got mine replaced under warranty but Renault would want around £500 quid to replace it so id try smaller garages first.

I have same problem. 3 induction coils changed, makes knocking sound when started(especially on cold day) and cuts outs if I take foot off gas. But this time as its happened, they said there is a cam shaft indicator error which they can't clear. CAMSHAFT, big job is it????

hope the problem has been sorted out for you now mate but if not its one of 3 things.
the first one is a tdc sensor, top dead centre!
sencond might be the cam shaft sensor or the third thing which you dont want is the camshaft difuser, this is bad news and will cost a fair few hundred from a garage the other 2 (tdc and camshaft sensor) are cheaper ranging from £80 to £140 depending where you go.
only trouble is that its they will try the two sensors first and if its not that then you've probably gonna be spending close to £700+ for all 3 to be sorted.
fingers crossed for you its only a tdc sensor. how do i know all this? ive had the same problem with my 03 megane. i love my car but i'd trade it in for something more reliable any day.

Usually this fault is due to a problem with the coolant temperature sensor - it provides the ECU with the correct signal to keep the engine running when cold. Although plagued with faults, the Renault diagnostic system for this car is actually good, and they should be able to pinpoint the problem for certain.
