When I place a DVD or CD in the drive, the player spins it up and then searches for the start of the disk but cannot find it. The player gives up and displays "No Disk". I have taken it apart and watched the player try to read the disk. The laser apparently tries two locations to identify the disk but fails on both. I don't see anything that could adjust the alignment, nor does anything appear to be worn out. One more note - the laser unit seems to be contacting the bottom of the disk.
remove the ribbon wire attached to the laser assembly and put it back again. if not work, ajust the two resistor on the optical pick-up.

this is a very poor answer as the cost of lens replacement
is too expensive as you can buy a new player for $40

With the Symptons that you have described, I could conclude that the Lens is gone weak/defective. The soluton would be to replace the lens. In some dvd/vcds the lens comes alongwith the Mechanism, hence you may have to repalace the CDM.
A simple precaution is to have a disc left inside the player so that dust does not land onto the lens, thereby giving you a longer life for the lens.
