I had the same problem on my 1999 3.0 TD. The main dealer traced it to a broken sensor cable on the front wheel and repaired it. Not an essential repair but an annoying nuisance.

You need to select two wheel drive and then drive the vehicle around the block - aiming to alternate from driving the wheels to over-run in second gear a few times. If you have already done this I don't know what the answer is.
