MAKE SURE THAT THE VENT HOSE IS UNBLOCKED AS HEAT BUILDS UP AND OVERHEATS IF ITS BLOCKED !!! this is the first check you should do (ex hotpoint engineer)

sounds like the thermostat has gone, should be easily fixed at a reasonable cost, look for local repairers in newspapers, costs are usually lower as they do not have shop over heads.
