As I push the cleaner up and down the carpet, it makes a sporadic loud 'rasping' noise. Am I correct in thinking this is some kind of slipping clutch? If so, it must be slipping before it should, because I am satisfied there is no blockage or jamming.
I would be grateful for some advice before I go tearing it apart.
Thats what I thought but found the bearings at the brush ends were dry-squirt of WD40 and everything went quiet. Pete

Mine has done that and both times there was something stuck in the brushbar, such as a screw. Just take apart the soleplate, make sure it is free to move and put it back together carefully without trapping any bristles.

If you have the "all floors " model with brush roll on or off it will almost certainaly be the clutch. You would be best advised to take it somewhere to be repaired.
