Kenwood a701a running slowly?

I've inherited a nice old mixer which has lost it's gumption when using the beater. I've been told the carbon brushes need replacing in the motor. Does anyone know if this is correct, and is it something I could do myself? I've taken the top off of the machine and can see the belt isn't slipping and everything else seems to be working. Any advice appreciated.
