Hi, thanks for your answer. We took it apart after buying some Tork screwdrivers. The belt was fine. The plastic hidden switch wasn't high enough to make contact so we put a felt pad underneath it & now it works fine!

I don't know this machine but they all operate much the same.
There's usually a safety interlock to stop the machine operating unless it's all correctly assembled - a little button with a hidden switch below. The bowl will contact the button and the lid will cause the button to be depressed - you may have a defective lid - or bowl.
