I have exactly the same issue with mine. If the steam option is selected it seems to endlessly take water to generate steam, causing an even bigger issues as we're on a water meter - when it first did it, it was on all weekend and bleached/shrunk my housemate's shirts.
After speaking to Hotpoint Service it's likely a blown water level sensor or main control board, and they've advised me it's no longer guranteed and it's likely to be ÂŁ100+ parts to get fixed, so it's going over the dump. Shame as it's only 3 years old but won't be buying another.
