How can I repair the on switch on Hoover TV30?

Pressing the on switch works, but there is a loud buzzing noise and when the switch is released the machine switches off. Sometimes, if the switch is held in - for 10s to several minutes - the buzzing stops and the switch will have latched. Very frustrating. Is it the switch or the timer?
