Wider than wide screen, nice smell of ozone then pop -nothing- please help?

I have a Goodmans 28" widescreen W288 NSS TV just over 5 years old (so I'm glad I didn't go for the 5 year warranty).

For two or three weeks the picture has been somewhat larger than the screen losing about 4" on each side (definately horizontally but not vertically (or at least I think so)). Switching the TV to non-widescreen mode shows the picture edges are bowed, other than that though the picture has been perfect.
If that wasn't bad enough, I settle down to watch some TV that I want to watch for a change whilst my missus goes out with the girlies. Fifteen minutes into TV bliss I notice a rather strong smell of ozone and then half an hour later the screen goes gargar and the sound follows suit. I try to turn it off with the remote but it will not respond. Then the thing goes dead. Not even a power light. I let the thing cool down for a couple of hours and try to turn it on. Nothing happens other than I can hear the high frequency sound that it usually makes when turning on.

Can you please help. I'm an ex-time served electronics engineer but have been in computing for far too long now to delve in without some good advice.

I had suspected a horizontal gain transistor for the wider than wide screen problem (not that I'd no where to find it if it was it or indeed what other components it may have burned out with it) but the total loss has thrown me.

I need answer quick before my two toddlers lose the will to live without their blessed tots TV channels.

Thanks in advance - jonboy

Probably line output transformer along with the transistor.
