How can I open the rear door of a Golf (1.9 TDI) ?

Please could some one tell me how to open the rear door of a 2001 Golf GT TDI 1.9 when the central locking mechanism will not open the door. I imagine I will have to change the electronic locking mechanism on the door but will need to remove the inner door skin, but can not do that with the door locked closed No amount of pulling on the lock button, swearing at it or threaterning to attack it with a tin opener seems to work. Any idead anyone???
