1988 Mercedes 300 sel (126) speedo stopped working?

My speedo on the above stopped working a few months ago and then it worked a couple of times now nothing. Must be electrical?
Would love some advice before I take the car apart!

Hi macheal the car speedo is electronic as you say so the norm is that the speedo drive on the rear of the gearbox has a wire on it and most times it will have a break in it check this out as the cluster unit never gives problems.You need to look for a round plug held in with a size ten bolt this is the speedo drive unit.
