how do I change my phone cords, one end is covered by a plastic plate?

My wife bought a corded phone, slimline with call waiting caller i.d. etc, model number 29267GE3-B General Electric/Atlinks. It was $12.99 or so at Circuit City. She wants to have longer cords, and one end of each cord on the phone has a jack, and the other end of each may have one, but they are covered by a plastic panel, so it is not evident how to change them. one cord is for the reciever to the base, and the other is from the base to the wall jack. In the product specs it says they are replacable by the user, but I don't know how this is accomplished. I don't know if there is a way to get these loose from the outside, or if i need to take the phone apart, etc., which doesn't seem to make sense if they are user replacable. can anyone help here?

I am answering my own question. I removed the four rubber pads on the bottom apparently held on by some kind of contact cement. This revealed four screws. I removed these and opened the phone. There was a small board in there, and the wires are hardwired to it. The plastic pieces that the wires enter the base through(the ones which are also visble from the outside of the base when assembled) are to keep the wires from pulling through. The wires go through them in a zig zag. So the wires are not servicable by just plugging them in etc. Some soldering or some other connections would have to be made by a skilled person. I was surprized at how little there was inside the base. The older phones were much heavier with a lot more things inside. Anyway, maybey this will help someone else. Have a nice day.
