how can i remove rear bumper bmw e46 1998?

someone hit my rear bumper, causing the shock abssorbers to compress slighty ,so the front part of the bumper dropped out of the clips by 12mm, I am hoping i can take off the bumper, and get the compressed shockers to go to normal lenght, before refitting?
