New CD player distorts audio ?

I just bought a new Wedge radio with a CD player built in. I was playing a brand new CD and part the way through it distorted a song. I tried a different CD and it played fine. Other CD's have become distorted on my old Sony CD player. Some become ruined when this happens and won't play on either CD player after that.

What causes this? What is the fix? I've tried cleaning the CDs with my Skip Dr. but that doesn't help.
