When setting the timing marks you can't just set them... you have to be at top dead center on number one cylinder on the compression stroke. take spark plug out and put finger over hole. turn crank till you feel air coming out the hole. set piston at it's highest point and then make sure timing marks are alinged properly. do a compression check after... if no compression, it may be an interference type engine which means the valves slammed into the piston and either bent them or put a hole in the piston.
