The only thing that I can offer is the actual location of the pump that operates the central locking to my 5 door '97 Polo:
Open the boot and on the RHS (drivers side) pull the panel back near where the first aid box is stored and you should be able to locate the pump which feeds the tubes (that open the doors). I am not an expert but offer this only as a 'start' to any one who wishes to do a D I Y job!
