I just took one apart and had the same issue. It not too difficult to dissemble if you remoce all the screws you see on the cover after the front part is unlatched from the body. The the clear plastic cove snaps open with two small clips basically.
The story is that the belt runs off a sproket attached to a wind driven impellor. Hope that is not too confusing to understand. I cleaned reset my belt and lubercated the friction points but still could not get the belt to torn more than a few RPM's. It is a cheap not very functional design and most works well on the drawing board I suspect. If your want more than the edger to work well again you may need to replace it with a new device I suspect.
