How do I remove the petrol cap on Suffolk Punch Lawnmower?

This might sound like a really stupid question, but I have recently inherited a suffolk punch cylinder lawnmower that is petrol powered - and I cannot work out how to remove the petrol cap! It is obviously some sort of safety cap but It has baffled me and several of my friends.
