to those people that find that their Golf locks itself after a couple of minutes will find that at the bottom of the driver's door closing post there is a button that controls the interior security control which has two sensors beside each of the rear seat lights. these sensor check for any internal movement and if none then the central locking locks the car. With the key in your hand get out of the car shutting the doors and wait to see if it locks itself, if nothing happens try opening the door and pressing the button, shut the door and wait. If the system locks the car it is working. Decide for yourslf whether you want it, the self locking system, on or off

Be very careful, I got out of my Golf TDI with engine running to post a letter.....closed the drivers door and posted the letter....came back to car to find all locks had gone down ...no boot no way of getting into car, thank God I had knowone in the car, like a child or demented parent...because the only way that I could open car was with spare key....TAKE NOTE if your locks fail then dont leave your car running ....take out the key X

There is a little part that breaks. There is an up grade kit that fixes it. Kit is about $50 and includes an new lock that that will need your lock tumblers swapped into so your key will work. Should be 1/2 hr mechanic time to install.
I haven't fixed my power lock system yet, but I think it is the air pump for the locks.

Don't undo the screw fully as it holds a carrier bracket (this sites around the locking barrel) and if this falls inside the door, you'll need to take the door apart (which I had to do) which is a real pain.

I have done this but don't know how the bracket fits back in, i have tried but it seems really loose and falls out anone got any ideas?

Had the same problem about 6 months ago with my drivers door so used the passenger door instead. Last night, that bugger packed-up so I went to my Haynes manual - very simple...

Open the door and at the edge, you'll notice a small round plastic plug in-line with the key on the outside. Pop this out and then you'll notice through the hole, a round brass plug with a torx head. Cant determine size but grab a suitable driver and unscrew this (anticlockwise) whilst keeping pressure (keep it fully open) on the external door handle.

Don't undo the screw fully as it holds a carrier bracket (this sites around the locking barrel) and if this falls inside the door, you'll need to take the door apart (which I had to do) which is a real pain.

Eventually, after some turning, you'll notice that the barrel mechanism is loose so pull from the outside until it comes clear - a single unit with nothing attached. Tighten the brass plug a but so that it holds onto the carrier.

The next thing you'll need to do is acquire a replacement unit but you don't need to worry about having seperate keys as you can utilise the core barrel of your current unit assuming its the crappy piece of gun-metal that's shredded itself lke both of min had. These are available on sites such as eBay or you could fork-out at a VW dealer. Have a look around though at Euro Car Parts to save yourself a fortune.

Reversal of the above is required to place the barrel unit back.

Hope this helps

I have a 2000 VW Golf. These problems are quite simple. The reason the driver side won't open is because the locking mechanism has failed. There are two small pieces of metal that unlock the door when turned. Those pieces are easily broken. Poor Design. The hatch does not work because a piece of the mechanism has come undone. Nothing inside the door is broken, it just needs to be reattached.

Sandra,

Just realised that it could be just the lock mecanism on the driver's door. I have also had this problem! The solution was very easy. Replace the lock barrel. A car locksmith did it for me very quickly and quite cheaply. Use yellow pages - I used Auto-Locks Reading. www.auto-locks.co.uk

Sandra, I have an S reg Golf and suffer this annoying problem too. The doors appear to open (the pegs rise and and the unlocking noise can be heard) but they don't always open. I used to get in the passenger side and start the engine and open them with the engine running - believed it was not enough "umph" from the battery. Once or twice the passenger door stayed locked too so I had to get in the back and clamber over the front seats! Most ungainly way of getting in car. I got into the habit of leaving the car unlocked for a couple of years and then got around to replacing the battery. Since then - about 3 months ago I have not had the problem - but to be honest I still don't lock it very often. But certainly appears cured - perhaps ten unlocks without problem.

I think it's an annoying design problem - they probably only tested it at full voltage. When did you last have new battery?
