First you need to remove the top of the vacuum . Remove the four screws on the base two at front and two at back by rear wheels (i didn't see those). Then lift the top off as you press down on the handle release lever.

Remove the belt guard located on the right hand side (as you look at it from the front). Then release the brush bar by pulling on the sides of the vacuum
