Speedo Flickers on 1994 Renault Espace any ideas?

My speedo on my 1994 L reg Renault Espace flickers by about 10mph. Does anyone know if it is a cable or if it is electronic and how to go about fixing it.

It is a cable and it needs a new one around £80 from Renault and impossible to get elsewhere

Had a similar problem in that the needle would stick somewhere between 40-70 on long drives. I sprayed the speedo works at the back of the instrument panel with WD40 and that did the trick for 6+ months. But, the problem has returned so if anyone knows a more permanent fix I'd be glad to hear it.

Mine does the same thing (2.9 auto 1996 ) There is a cable, it runs from the gearbox, which houses the drive to the speedometer clock. The cable comes in 2 parts renault charges £40 each for them. TO REPLACE First (after disconnecting the battery) undo the plastic around the clocks, you will need a torx bit. The clocks are held on by 2 screws also at the top of the dash also a torx, be extremely carefull as it is easy to break the plastic or damage the wiring, there is electrical cables atached to the speedo cable unclip the connector at the end of the wires, carefully. you may need to go to the special renault mechanics clinic to have your wrists and elbows dislocated first. Go back into the bonnet and trace the cable (have an assistant to help you, use a flashlight) the cable will go from left to right. Take note of its original route as it is important it is not kinked and is fitted correctly upon replacement. unscrew the first half of the cable from the second. Follow the cable to the gearbox unscrew it there also, take off any clips and again remember where it went! go back in the car the cable is attached to the speedo clock by a plastic double clip, very carefully prise this of with a flat screwdriver, Dont break it! There is a rubber bulkhead seal on the cable where it enters the engine compartment to prevent water & noise coming in. Carefully and remembering how to put back, remove the said rubber. Now pull the cable carefully through the hole, taking care not to damage it (it may be fine! as there is 2 parts, only one may be faulty) again remove the 2nd part of the cable the cable is now out. INSPECT THE CABLE Look at the ends for roundness they should be square-ish you can turn the cable it should turn freely and can be oiled. Any doubts replace it. Now you know why the first guy said use a mechanic!! PS not a mechanic on cars bikes are easier I think and incidently find renaults a nightmare to work on. Good luck, Andy

Hi Lee, as far as I can see its an electronic sensor as megane/senic & laguna's of the same year and earlier all used the electronic speed sensor, if its jumping I can only think that there is wear in the drive from the gearbox or on the sensor drive shaft
