How to keep engine from turning to remove drive pulleys?

MTD Yard Machine 12.5 HP 38" cut Model Number 13AH451F352. I need to know how to keep engine from turning when trying to remove the drive pulley on output shaft.

I use an impact gun to remove the bolt. However is can also be done by removing the spark plug and feeding several feet of soft rope into the spark plug hole. Then as you turn the bolt the piston will come against the rope and bind the engine enough to allow the bolt to be loosened.
