some one who knows a bit:)?

hi,i ment the part of my exhaust which connects to the cyilinder head where it has the extra skinny bit of pipe before its derestricted. if i file in side the part that is left will this imporve performance? i fink it make the compression swirl down the exhaust. so if it does make it swirl doesnt that mean it slows the bike down? thanks alot josh:)

Josh, it's been years sinced I messed with bike engines...

The power output depends on the volume of air/fuel mixture you can squeeze into the cylinder when the bang! happens If you increase the volume by, for instance, fitting a super duper carb and improving the "breathing" you may then need to adjust the spark timing to get best advantage of the extra power available. With extra umph in the cylinder there will be more exhaust gasses so a fancy pipe will be needed.

As you increase the power more heat will be developed in the engine and more wear on the moving parts - dangers arise from the piston burning a hole and the big and little bearings being over stressed.

High performance engines need lots of maintenance because of these extra stresses. You bike is probably not up to being turned into a rocket without major engineering re-work on the internals of the engine.

I would guess that your best route to improving performance will be carb related - I know so little about modern engines I can't comment on how the spark is produced - car engines seem to be governed by a computer these days and improved software is usuallly needed to boost performance by adjusting fuel/air mixture and spark timing.

If I were you I would live with what I have and save my pennies for a better bike - you could spen lots of dosh and take lots of hours to get a poor return for your efforts...

Continuing good luck

Josh, Wikipedia has two articles that might help you (Mufflers) and (Exhaust system).

The challenges for an exhaust system is to move the burnt gasses away from the cylinder without causing back pressure and to meet the requirements of the law with respect to pollution and noise.

Any obstruction in the exhaust duct close to the cylinder will slow down the escaping gasses by making them swirl. In high performance racing engines the inlet and outlet ports are sometimes polished to help the flow of the inlet and outlet gasses.

If you have a street bike fliling away any burrs on the inside of the pipe will probably not be noticeable in the bike's performance but at the same time will probably do no harm

The design of exhaust pipes owes a lot to aerodynamics and big changes to a standard system, like sawing a couple of inches off the end, will seriously damage performance. You can also buy racing exhaust systems which do increase performance but these will likely cost loads-a-money.

Messing around with your exhaust is not going to do much to improve the bike's performance - any inprovement will be tiny at best and you can very easily make things worse.

Good luck...
