ford escort 1.8td how can i fix it?

i have a escort 1.8 and i accidently put petrol in it ive got all the fuel out and changed the pump but now when it starts it cuts out straight away as though it is dragging fuel back to the tank. when it is parked facing down hill it starts and keeps running . what else can i check and how can i mend it? has it got a electric pump on it if so can you please tell me where i could find it ?
