just looked at the fan speck in my haynes manual, it shouldnt kick in until 100 degrees, regardless of engine on petrols, should think its the same fan on the td, so dont worry. If you do just put the heater on full blast and open the windows. The heater matrix is first off the engine and will drop the temp immediately. If the blower goes cold and the temp increases you need to stop and top up the water asap. The early warning of this is the blower cools when at idle. ie sat at lights. I've just driven my 1.7 td 150 miles with a split a rad in heavy traffic. and the gauge never went above 95 with the heater on full. I've been told you can limp a car home with a blown head gasket in this manor. It worked for me. Replacing rad tomorrow so may be asking some questions myself
