How can I fix my Renault Clio Speedometer?

I HAVE A 2001 CLIO in which I removed and replaced the sensor . HOWEVER it FAILED TO WORK. I checked the plug that fits into the top of the sensor and it appeared damaged. So I cut it off the from the harness , intending to splice on a new one. IF anyone knows where I get this plug : help ! MIKE

I'm havering the same problem with my y reg, isit easy enough to fix as Crnt really afford to take it to garage with christmas coming up, step by step would be greatly appreciated if anyone has the time to help, my mph only works when it wants and I don't no wether the sensor is on gearbox or abs please help

im having the same problem speed sensor located top of gearbox stopped working , hit about 3,000 rpm in 5th gear crusing at 60 and enginemanagment light pops on, turn car off and on and resets untill 3,000rpm and does same again had a good feeling it was to do with speed sensor as its intermiting but now know for a 100% cuz of this post much thanks !

anyone got any clues to my problem got a clio mk2 2001 model abs light and service lights both on changed both front reluctor rings and abs sensors speedo was working fine when they was dissconected now goes well over the limit and lights go out for a short time but keep coming back on ive checked gearbox but there is no speedo attached to that any ideas lads thanks tony

same thing , but the test mode didnt work for me, does this mean it may just be a loose wire?

Im buying a 03 1.2 clio and the mileage dose not show up if I change the binnacle will I have 2 reset the mileage

hi i have a clio 2000 1,4 16v .just replaced the speedo now do i have to reset the miles or dose the car know my miles .?if so how do i do this ?

Exactly the same as the problem I had. Speedo just kept stopping and starting of its own will. Turned out to be the speed sensor on the gearbox.

Cost about £25 from Renault Dealer. Located centrally behind the engine in the top of the gearbox. Remove the air filter to get a bit of room. It had a small heat shield clipped to the side to protect it from the exhaust, just pull this off. The sensor is a bit difficult to get off. it has two locating lugs which are accessible through two small holes on either side of the entry spigot. Use a couple of screwdrivers to depress them and pull up with your third hand? for £25 I felt it was better to try this first than taking into a garage. I was right.

quick question on a 1999 clio, speedo etc that was on it didnt work, lit up but no movement on any dials, put some diffrent clocks on, i now have all lights on dash working and fuel and temp guage work but still no speedo or revs ?? any help

If the speedo goes round the clock about 25 - 30% a time on test mode, are the clocks at FAULT?
the speedo is recording around 60 - 80 mph when doing 30 - 40mph on the road?

Clio 1999 T the speedo works sometimes but not all the time and i don't know what speed im doing. It does it when ever it wants to do it and i don't really want to get stoped by the police for speeding. Does anyone know what the problem might be.

Sounds like your speedo sensor has gone - replacement is about £30 from Renault and takes 10-20 minutes to fit. The downside is that you need to be able to get into the engine bay as it sits near the gearbox - this is much easier if you can get the car on a set of ramps or similar.

These sensors are prone to damp, which can cause the speedo to shut off intermittently. The contacts on the sensor can be cleaned, but it's easier to just replace the whole thing - on Mk2. Clios at least, the sensor clips into place. Further, if the speedo decides to go to sleep, the engine management light will come on if the engine has been running at 3000rpm+ for more than 4 minutes if the ECU hasn't received a signal - however, there don't appear to be any fault codes logged in the ECU in this case, which is where the 'no fault' diagnosis may be coming from.

Nice tip about the clock test mode - will have to remember that!

Whoever said the entire instrument panel needs replacing is talking BS, I'm afraid.

Press the speedo trip button and turn on the ign wait about 4 secs and release button. All the clocks should go into test mode...fuel/water 1/4 1/2 3/4 full and so on, the rev/speedo move 20% each time....so if they are all working there is no problem with the cluster its the sender in the gearbox.

this has happened to my V reg clio I have been told that i need a new intrument unit it comes as a whole piece Apparently it is a common fault I havent done this yet as the unit is between £300-£400 new from renault the other option is a breakers yard where you would be looking at about £40ish ive been told. This has one down side that the milage will relate to the car it came out of so this could be "clocked" back to what your original milage is which is about £70

All this I have been Told by a mechanic I know but as i havent done it yet I can't 100% say it is the answer but hope it helps you
