Why is my Candy Fridge Freezer playing up?

The freezer is a self-defrost one, about 4 years old.

Although it is supposedly a self defrost model, it accumulates solid ice in the freezer compartment....... Why?

Over the last couple of days the orange light - which shows you have selected the 'super' (fast freeze) setting - has started to flash continuously, even though it's not set to fast freeze.

I don't really want to buy a new freezer this week so any suggestions would be appreciated!

Well managed to sort out the problem with my Hoover HNC6185A4 FRIDGE FREEZER but similar to Candy, anyway has Candy sticker on control unit relay. Having heard all the stories of rip off price control units and regas charges etc decided to fix myself, total cost £55 went for £16 can of r600a gas (could get for less if shopped around more) £5 for piercing valve £22 for manifold guage set and £12 for control unit which you can adjust parameters yourself and get temperature readout and came with two temperature probes. Anyway works fine after top up of gas -18c in freezer and 3c in fridge although can be adjusted with new control unit including defrost schedule. But it was a gas problem that prevented the fridge part from getting below 14c the control unit I got as wanted more control over system and an actual temperature reading as my model did not have this. (Did not fix leak so problem may come back and got away without buying vacume pump but don't intend to take it up for a living) but if and when I do get another fridge freezer I thinki I'll pay more for one with seperate compressors for freezer and fridge part, and if I don't need to add gas this one anymore, well I can fill my lighter at least with whats left.

I have one too under another name, Hoover, same thing with Candy parts. Worked more or less for first year then failed to cool in both freezer and fridge part. Freezer was +1.4c fridge +14c. After switching off (at mains) and defrosting for two days which it should do by itself but fails to properly, the freezer worked again -20c, but fridge stayed at +12/+14 depending on room temperature.

Eventually decided to examine myself, thermostat in fridge goes through control unit too I think, anyway took cover off evaporator in freezer section only to find that the white wall behind had cracks and had yellowed in one part, whether this happened before it was delivered to me as brand new or a result of the defrost heating element staying on too long/overheating I don't know.

However I noticed that there are no ducts for cold air to be blown into the fridge section, just a small hole for the wires to the heater and thermal switch, neither are there any vents in the fridge section for cold air to be blow in. I have read lots of engineers’ articles going on about these but this model does not have any. Neither Candy/Hoover supply exploded technical diagrams or service manuals for these and so far no engineer I came across seems to mention these fridges as they talk about air circulation from freezer to fridge, not on this model (unless it's going through a polystyrene filled penny sized wire hole away from and behind fan and thru insulation to back wall of fridge).

The back wall off the fridge does get cool and once ice built up on it from time to time before it completed failed. I need to know if there is an separate evaporator of some kind behind the fridge wall, unfortunately with no diagrams for these models available and no engineer mentioning anything about these models fixing DIY in the dark would be a pain, may as well take one to pieces as the rear section is sealed which insulation and no access able parts.

There is a tube from the compressor that goes up into that foam somewhere, one capillary goes to freezer if another goes to mystery evaporator behind the fridge wall I don't know. In any case it seems these particular models have are flawed and with no available official construction information all deliberate to make money from after service, it was good that I kept my old fridge which although small lasted over 40 years and even today saved my food from the failings of modern design.

Oh the model I have is called a Hoover HNC6185A4 with a Candy circuit control board at rear next to the compressor. Maybe it's just a dodgy fridge thermostat/control unit, I would understand that if behind the fridge wall was secondary sealed evaporator, maybe someone out there knows, maybe it is a dark secret or even conspiracy of some kind.

Therefore if a manufacturer does not supply a schematic or make easily available a service manual for their product like they did in the old days its best not to buy their products if at all possible.

I have a similar problem with Candy CRCF5174 which has now been withdrawn - makes me think they are all the same.

I have to say since getting my candy fridge freezer 9first combination fridge freezer), Im not pleased... I've already had the 'Brains'/Controller board of the fridge freezer replaced, that cost me over £100 and ok now the freezer is working fine and even if I put the thermostat upto 5 the fridge does get down to 3 degrees but after opening the fridge to get some milk for a coffee, the compressor doesn't come on for about half an hour so for about half an hour the temp of the fridge is above 5 degrees, no wonder things were going off so quick!

Am not impressed!

Apparently the same system is used in hoover as well

Same experience as the rest of you - although a decent defrost has worked each time. I have to defrost the whole thing manualy and leave it for a good day or two. Not just a quickie job with a hairdrier - that doesn't help. Defrost, clean out & make sure the air is reasonably dry. The humidity is what makes extra ice inside freezer and back wall of fridge. So don't be running a bath in the adjacent bathroom or hanging out your washing at the same time.
Also check that the two channels for water going out the back are clean and free and empty the water out the back container before switching it back on.
Iget to do this about every 6 months. Not great, but it saved me from buying a new fridge so far.

I was told I was running the fridge part too cold so that made the freezer "over-work" and freeze up freeze too much. I still have to get it the ice out manually even though I have set it so that the fridge is barely runnning as a fridge. The ice collects and makes a terrible noise.

I have a problem with my candy Fridge/Freezer as the fridge compartment temp is around 15c to 20c which should be around 1c to 5c and the temp of the freezer is around -18c to -25c which is ok

mine has been rubbish from the beginning. The frost free freezer never worked and I have to defrost it manually. The engineer tried to tell me it was because I left the door opened too long. It also makes a terrible cracking noise from time to time.
There is always water on the back partition of the fridge and my vegetables get frozen in the salad box.
Never again I shall buuy Candy

Mine has played up almost since new. Gets frost in the top freezer drawer and also at the back of the fridge. It also seems to permanently have water under the salad drawer. Engineer told me I'd need a new part that would cost over £200 to stop the icing up problem. I am concerned it must be costing more to run than it should so will replace it as soon as I can and would never by another Candy!
