Renault Clio (96) Overheating Help !!!?

I have a renault clio,old type and I have been having a few troubles with overheating.
Firstly going on the road the temperature gauge will go up into the last few bars causing the red dot to appear.
The water boils up but yet the radiator is stone cold?
The engine ends up getting overheated,so I have to pull to the side til it cools down,yet putting more water into it.

Any Ideas on how to solve this please?

if radiator is cold that's indicating faulty radiator. replace radiator and thermostat together to be on safe side then u r all good

I have the same problem, the thermostat is working but the water is not going round the engine which makes me suspect the pump, the radiator is cold and the pipes leading to and from the pump are cold. If it is an airlock how do you bleed it and if it is the pump why isnt it losing water?

i had the same problem in the end it turned out to be the thermostat, believe it or not they can be put in the wrong way round, which i believe is easy to do, check that its the right way round!!!!

Is the cooling fan kicking in? If no, remove the fan thermostat switch from the radiator and bridge the two connection. If the fan runs, then you need a new fan thermostat switch, (about £10 -£13 from eurocarparts.com)

If the radiator is cool and the rest of the engine is burning hot, then there could be a couple of things.

1, The engine thermostat is buggered.
Test this by removing it and suspend it in a pan of water,(if should be closed) bring the pan up to the boil and it should open, if it is not fully open, you need a new one.

2. Make sure that there is not an airlock in the system. This just the same as in your home. Open the bleed valve on your radiator and run the engine, any air should be expelled. Run it till fuild just starts to come out of the bleed ole and tighten the screw up again and top up the coolant as necessary.

I have replaced the thermostat, what do you do when you have replaced the thermostat?- you add coolant when the car is running, when the water goes down in to the engine you keep toping it up...............then what?

I have a P Reg Clio and experienced the same problem as you. However, I also noticed engine coolant pouring out of the bottom of the car.

Took it to the garage and found out the water pump had failed. There is a bypass in the pump which is where the coolant was leaking from.

New pump should cost about £50.

the themostat is blocked and not leting water in the radiater to cooldown do not drive as u could warp the head

sounds like your thermostats seezed or theres some blockege,try removing your thermostat and putting it in a bucket of hot water' if it opens up its ok,if not you will need a new one,if you need your car in the time being leave the thermostat valve out of your car, the car will run fine without it and your over heating should cease.a new thermostat valve shouldn,t cost much....

Hi,
You need a new thermostat I think! The one you have is very likely stuck closed so water isn't flowing to the radiator when the engine reaches its running temperature. If nothing else take the thermostat you have out of its housing and see if hot water passes to and through the radiator without it. Without a thermostat the temperature guage will move up to down as you speed being cooled by air passing through the radiator.

Thermostats regulate the temp of the coolant so that the engine runs safely and efficiently, so you should really have one to protect the engine and save on petrol. Overheating the engine to boiling is not a good idea as you could damage the head and block or damage the head gasket.

Be careful removing the thermostat housing as they corrode and can "stick" to the engine. You will need a new gasket for the housing which should come with a new thermostat; there could also be a rubber sealing ring to bed the thermostat. Clean the surfaces to smooth before reassembly. Don't over tighten the securing nuts this could crack the housing when engine become hot.

I have no real experience of Clio's but these things are fairly standard. If the French are different, I apologies.

sounds like your thermostat. If the radiator is cold the thermostat hasn't opened to allow the water to flow through. Take it out and test it by tying it to a piece of string and dipping it in a pan of boiling water. It should open. If not put a new one in and as long as you haven't damaged the engine by overheating you should be ok.

The Cooling fan seems to be working up the the point where it boils up.
Getting a water pump new for it and going to get a garage to check the head gasket as well as change it.
I recently found out that the bolts on the engine were not on tightly for some stupid reason and this could of been making the problem even worse than it is!
If it has waped the cylinder head or blown the head gasket,do you have any ideas what type of price im looking at lol ?

Whether the fan is working or not is immaterial IMHO. It sounds like you need a new water pump. Don't fall into the trap of getting an old (scrap) one off the shelf as very often the bearings on those are shot.
Not an easy DIY job either so suggest you find a reputable local garage rather than a Renault main dealer. If it's any help, my local guy charged me £90 to supply and fit.

Sounds like you have a air lock in the cooling system which can be caused by pouring water in too fast or could be your thermostat stuck shut. There is a trick where you can start the engine from cold and let it get hot but leave the expansion tank cap off and it will bleed itself of air but the only other solution is to remove the thermostat itself and dangle it in hot water to see if it opens. If you keep driving and overheating the engine you have a good chance of warping the cylinder head/blowing the headgasket and that could be expensive to fix. Hope this helps?
