AEG Lavamat 76800 washing machine does not wash?

When any of the wash cycles are selected the appropriate lights come on as usual and the machine fills with water normally. The drum then does an initial turn as though it is starting to wash but the "Main Wash" light then goes off, the water is pumped out and the time indicator returns to '000' as though the whole cycle had been completed. No error code is displayed. I would be grateful for any suggestions.
