how do i change a coil pack on a renault megane?

i have been advised that the coil pack needs replacing on my renault megane what is a coil pack it is a common fault and how do i replace it

Just a query. When you change the packs does the engine management light on the dashboard go off automatically or do you need to get software reset.

Hi i got a split in the exhaust i put gum gum on it yesterday but the coil pack of one of them got changed three months ago its juddering in all gears we got two looked at two days ago but they said it was okay please help ive spent lots of money on it in garages i dont want to spend more on it thanks

Look at your engine on the top you will see four wires these are plugged into your coils. unplug the wire to whichever coil you are changing (it's usually trial & error ) using a Torx bit take out the screw holding in the coil, pop the new one in screw it bk in then reattach the plug turn the engine on & take it for a spin. if the problem persists try the next coil along & so on incidentally if you have a wee peek down the hole u took the coil from thats where ur spark plugs live. cheers

I've had mine done today - as everypne has already said, it is a common fault - i've had to have all my pluga replaced and 2 coil packs. Total cost of £74 including labour.

Thanks Ray for you advice. I did as you said and lucky me the first one I tried was the dodgy one. The part cost me 36 pounds with the garage quoting me 300. Just one bolt and it was done. Cant thank you enough.

HI, i have a renault clio 1.4 1999 azize, i have been told of a slight mis fire and that i need the a coil pack replaced.
When i have called round, i have been asked what the colour of the terminal is ???? red or black or gray??? can you tell me where is the terminal please ? thanks

I would recommend www.renaultforums.co.uk as a great source of renault information. I am not sure why Andy said about not disconnecting the leads when the engine is running. I have owned a Laguna and a Megane, changed 4 coils in total and disconnecting leads with the engine running does not cause a problem. The computer will log it as a fault but will recognise it is fixed when you reconnect the lead. It will stay in the memory but not cause fault lights or problems. If your engine is really bad, ie if it is badly misfiring and rocking backwards and forwards, then simply removing each lead one at a time will identify the faulty coil - the engine will not alter when the faulty coil is diconnnected but the others will likely lead to a stall. If the coil is only slightly degraded but still working, your best indication is erratic idling (generally ok but every few seconds the engine misses a beat) then you simple have to change each coil one at a time and take it for a drive to see if it handles better and watch your revcounter on idle to see if the engine is still missing a beat.
On top of your engine is a large silves plastic cover, this normally slides off. Under this are four items that look like salt/pepper pots all in a row and each have 1 roll of wires going to them with a rectangular connector. These are the coils.

Ray, could you pls further me that will i change first plug coil pack, how shall i know if it was the right one? by driving it. the engine give plenty of vibration. will it be possible to show an image explaining where is it and how to do it?

We have similar problem on a Feb2003 Megane Scenic - apparently this is a known fault with a batch of Ignition Coil Packs fitted in 2002-3 (found this out from a work colleague who had a similar problem) but Renault decided not to recall the affected cars. When we called Renault UK today and told them this they initially offered to go 50/50 on the repair, when we told them this wans't acceptable as it is a known fault they agreed that they would pay if done through a dealer. The dealer will confirm the fault and Renault UK will then authorise them to complete the work free of charge. That is what Renault customer services have told us - it is booked in for tomorrow, the dealer told us to bring it straight in and wearily described the symptoms we had been having, intermittent not starting and now some misfiring, loss of power at low revs - sorry don't have the Renault UK number to hand. Good luck.

THIS IS A VERY COMMON FAULT. THE COIL PACK IS A UNIT ABOUT 8 INCHES LONG THAT PLUGS ONTO THE TOP OF THE SPARK PLUG IN PLACE OF THE USUAL HT LEAD. THERE IS ONE COIL PACK FOR EACH PLUG. THERE IS A PUSH FIT PLUG ON THE SIDE WHERE YOU CONNECT THE PERMANENT WIRING FORM.
YOU NEED TO BUY A COIL PACK AND REPLACE ONE UNIT AT A TIME TO FIND OUT WHICH INDIVIDUAL PACK IS FAULTY. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO NOT DISCONECT THE UNIT FROM THE SPARK PLUG OR THE WIRING PLUG FROM THE UNIT WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING OR IGNITION IS TURNED ON. IF YOU DO.... YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE THE SOFTWARE RESET !!
CHANGE A UNIT, TRY IT ... TURN OFF.. CHANGE ETC.
I ASSUME THE TROUBLE IS MISSFIRING OR ONLY RUNNING ON 3 CYLINDERS.
THE COIL PACKS ARE A PAIN AND RENAULT RECOGNISE THE PROBLEM BUT REFUSE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT (IV'E HAD 6 !!) YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND OUT WHATS DODGY ON A RENAULT, IF THE PARTS IN STOCK... IT'S DODGY !
