PEUGEOT VIVACITY WON'T REV - HELP!?

my son's Peugeot Vivacity 2002 or 2003(Burgundy Red) 50cc with Gurtner/France carb starts up nicely but after the engine gets warm - and presumably the choke is switched off - will not rev. The carb is now twice cleaned with pressurised air and all sems to be ok. It is like it would not get enough of petrol or something? Could there be a problem with electronics?

Date: 21st October 2013 - I have just been in touch with scooterworks in Birmingham, UK (find them on eBay) about my 2005 Vivacity 50 which is showing exactly the same tickover fine/sometimes revs and goes/soon loses power and dies to a tickover again issues.

I have already cleaned the carb out with petrol and a high pressure air line, replaced the vacuum fuel valve from the tank, replaced the spark plug, changed the petrol for new and drained the fuel tank looking for dirt, etc. I had started to suspect the electric choke so made a call to Scooterworks to ask if this could be the problem.

Scooterworks tell me this is a common problem caused by something in the carburettor blocking and they have never found an answer to clear the problem. They advised the only way to solve it is to buy a new carb - this cost me £50 but I was told this was 99.9% sure to solve the problem once and for all. The guy said that he has seen this issue even on newly delivered Peugeot scooters being taken through their pre-delivery check-out runs.

This comes as welcome information

Sir, I am very happy to report, that your tip of placing a tiny washer to "lift the choke" worked! The scooter starts & revs very nicely now. As my son has turned 18, he decided to sell it, which would have been more difficult with no solution to this problem.

THANK YOU!

Hello again, sorry for the delay. The Peugeot was serviced and they claimed there was "some dirt" in the carburator.. that statement is full of it, since I cleaned it 3 times. To me it seems they just tried to get off easy.. BUT, the sad thing is, that after the service the scooter did well 2 months.. and now, same syptoms appeared again.. Starts quite easily, refuses to rev, but does it after a while. Can happen, that when stopping for red light in traffic lights, does not rev as one would expect, eventually yes. Frustrating..

Firstly, thank you for your help and kind words: for a non-native speaker of English the abbreviations are many times more difficult than writing deceant text.. :-)

I will try your tip and report back again, thank you again!

ah well it will not be happy with no air filter at all,you need to put that back in as it seems that the problem is as you say and fuel related more to the point a lack off. is the fuel new and not old stale fuel as petrol has a very short shelf life these days (around 3 weeks)!!try this, take the throttle slide out of the carb and then take the cable out of the slide, then take the needle out of the slide you will notice there is no circlip to move and make the running richer or leaner,so you need to get a small and i mean small washer and put it under the needle so that when it is back in the slide less of it is coming out of the bottom of the sldie this will richen the mix up as it lifts the needle out of the main jet earlier and also further than before.try this and tell me how it goes this will help you solve your problem which i am sure is weakness of the mixture.please make sure younrefit the air filter as this will make things worse if its out and drawing in too much air.ps nice to see a person who can write in the corret manner without endless 'text' like abbreviations'

The air filter was cleaned - nothing much in it - and washed with petrol too; the problem persists, even though there is no filter in place.

The jets are cleaned and there through light is visible.

As the engine is running idle, giving it throttle it will die or if one lets the throttle go, go back to idle run. You can lure it to higher revs, but eventually it will die again. (Or if you let it go, idle will resume)

It would be nice to know, whether one can trick the choke to be "on" even though the engine is warm, just to see, that there is no problem with petrol supply. My theoru is, that as the engine is cold, there has been time for the carb to be filled with petrol; as the engine get s warmer, the choke is off and the carb is basically low on petrol - is this a possible vision?

To my mind, since the problems came as the cold autumn weather came, the fuel system prior to the carb could, could it be glogged some how?

Previously, I thought, the CDI-unit might be defect, but as the engine will occasionally rev up, I doubt it? Is there a way to check it?

Thank you for your answers so far!

so when you open the throttle up when its warm does the engine just bog down and die if you open the throttle up or just not rev very high.if its just not revving very high then there is a good chance the exhaust is blocked or there is something restricting the inlets air supply like the airfilter being badly blocked with something, like a leaf or plastic bag.its more likeley to be the exhaust blocked though with carbon.let me know what the answer is to the above question.

have you taken the main jet out of carb. and can you see daylight through it? if not then it is blocked.
