Easy enough to change if the wires have been cut between the sensor and the plug.
Unscrew the old sensor, screw in the new one then plug it in.
If they've been cut between the plug and the engine management system you'll have to get it all spliced together.
Any idea when or why the wires were cut?
I can only think if the sensor was seized in the exhaust someone might have cut them so they could get a ring spanner on it, or they tried to fit a universal type sensor and made a hash of joining the wires.
Dont waste your money on universal type sensors, or cheap ebay rubbish, buy a proper Vauxhall or Bosch part.

Indeed it does sound like the lambda sensor...this device looks at the oxygen content of the exhaust gas and adjusts the fuelling of the engine accordingly, so you can't expect your car to be running right!
