broken sun visor in Hyundai?

I have an 07 Sonata. The driver's side sun visor won't stay up any more. It falls down and I can't see under it so I keep it to the side but it makes it hard to see cars coming up on my left. Can it easily be fixed?

I bought a '07 Santa Fe and within months both sun visors broke in a span of a month. Drivers' side one fell in front of my wife's face while she was driving. Unbelievable! Even Chryslers don't do that!!!
I bought this vehicle out of desperation since my old van died in -40C weather and this thing was sitting on a lot ready to be driven away, so I did that.
But - shame on me for buying an import, when GM makes pretty damn good SUV's (Terrain, anyone?). I'll just go to a scrapyard and remove it myself from a wreck, can't drive home westbound without a visor.
For the rest of you - make sure that for your next vehicle you buy domestic. Trump would also agree!

I have 2007 Hyundai Accent w/ broken sun visor at drive side. The dealer quotes $140 for one, to me that's too expensive. I found a right one at www.car-part.com and it cost between $20 ~ $60 which was very reasonable as a used one. I am going to order one and replace by myself. Thanks.

It started with the driver side first and now both the visors on my 2008 Hyundai Sonata are broken. Just called the dealer and they said that it is not covered since my model is not in the recall.

I have a Hyundai Accent 2007, a few months ago the passenger visor started falling down, it would stay up if i pushed it into just the right position, but then I was forced to flip it around and put it into the holder backwards, now it won't even stay there and I need to find a replacement. Buying one wouldn't be such a big deal but autopartscheaper wants $156 for a single visor, that's 3 times more expensive than the ones for the Sonata even though they are nearly exactly the same. I paid a lot of money for this car and I shouldn't have to spend ANOTHER 300 to get visors that work! I already had to replace the driver's side window button because there was a short, and several other very expensive things and I've had the car only a year. I definitely got screwed when I bought it. Should have stuck with the Honda.

My 2009 Accent (48K miles) driver side visor just fell in front of my face tonight while driving ~50 MPH on highway at rush hour. Fortunately, I could react quickly and avoid accident. But, this is serious!

We really need EVERYONE who has experienced this issue with their Hyundais to file a complaint with the NTSB. Because each complaint is make AND model specific (actually model year too), all instances need to be reported to get the attention of the NTSB. They seem to have trouble grouping complaints when they are across models and model years.

Also, where it asks for Affected Parts, use "Visibility/Wiper" as I could not find anything for "sun" or "visor". And just the "Visibility" aspect is enough to keep the complaints consistent.

Include how the falling visor was very potentially accident-causing... really hype it up!

You should be able to find my complaint by using this Confirmation / ODI Number: 10629516 after about Sept 4 or 5, 2014.

My right side sun visor broke in the same way as everyone's here. What i found is the plastic rod that goes up through the mount that screws to the headline simply broke leaving a small ring of the broken part, then the remaining rod that has nothing to hold the visor in place.
What I did was I found a very narrow screw about 1" long with a larger washer. I simply pushed the visor up into the mount as far as it would go. Then there is a hollow tube that let the wire pass through for the lighted mirror. So I screwed the screw with washer larger than the opening down into the hollow tube so the visor is attached to the mounting tab again. I will not use the wire for the lighted mirror since I put the screw in the hollow tube. I kind of used the wire as a spacer and something for the screw to attach to. Just a temp fix until I find an aftermarket visor priced right. There seem to be many left side visors for $40 or so but I can't find a right side for less that $120 or so. Maybe this will help someone. I know it's not easy to under stand but once you have the visor removed I think you will see how my screw and washer might work for you. Good Luck.

Yep! Us to, on our 2006 sonata with only 55,000 km on the clock. Whilst on holiday, wife had brake down.
The Hyundai dealer were we bought the car wants $280 for one.
Will not be buying another car from them.
E bay is the go if you need one, or try Auto parts cheaper.

Both of mine have broken within the past few months. Definitely a hazard. Mine fell and hit me in the face while driving the other day (despite trying different things to keep it in place). Just bit the bullet and bought a driver's side replacement on Auto Parts Cheaper for $157. Yikes. It's gonna cause an accident if I don't fix it. Good to know it wasn't just my car. I will be submitting complaints to the appropriate places.

I fixed mine, just slide the visor out of the tube about 3 to 4 inches (you will see a chrome tube) and using some vise-grip pliers smash the tube (all 4 inches) so that instead of being a round tube, it becomes oval, then slide the visor back in place. after smashing the tube I also had to bend it a little so that it stayed up.

It worked for me. Hope it works for you.

I have the same problem with my visor on the drivers side - 2009 yr. After reading all these complaints. these Hyundai dealers should really think about a recall. And yes it is a safety hazard. when the sun is glaring in your face a sun visor is needed. Why else would they have them in a car??

my 2007 santa fe dirver side visor failed similarly...I see online replacement parts for about $100. Google for part 85201A for those searching.

I have files a complaint with NHTSA at the link posted by the previous poster.

The more who file this complaint, the better the chance of Hyundai doing what they should do and recall / replace at their expense. This is a defective design that they need to fix.

Please please complain to the http://www.nhtsa.gov/ and click on "file a complaint" on the right hand side. Apparently this is what they may look at to begin an investigation, which could lead to a recall. If there is a recall, they will reimburse you for your expense, so keep receipts.

Fellow Sonata owners. My 2008 Sonata has 75000 miles, Drove coast to coast, the dependabilty is worth a new visor, My brand new Chevy's computer went out after the 12k warranty, Cost $2000

Here's a 37-cent solution that worked for me. Buy a small spring clip (about 2-inches long) at Home Depot. Hold the visor all the way up and attach the clip on the horizontal bar at the side of the visor. This will hold the visor up, which can be lowered to desired height. The clip may need to be reapplied when moving the visor back up. It works just fine and isn't as frustrating as using duct tape!

I was quoted over $200 for one by the dealer. New parts can be purchased for $45-50 each (original Hyundai) and replacement is easy. Hyundai have admitted to a problem and now have redesigned the visor. I got mine from autopartscheaper.com. Going back to the dealer may result in getting "old" visors, same problem will occur later.

This is a safety issue! Had both break on my 2007 Sonata. Until they decide to fix, I am using an old screen door return bracket to keep them up. Takes the place of original bracket and works good. Paint to match the interior.

2007 Sonata with only 21,000 miles on it and both sun visors broke. Took to the dealer and they said it would cost over $200 for the set, plus install fee. The warranty was up. I left the store in disgust. We are using dowel rods to hold the visors up.

2006 Sonata both just broke early Oct 2012. They both broke within 1 week of each other. I have 45000 so maybe I'll get lucky with the warranty but from reading everyone here its not looking good. I had a 1982 Buick Riviera previously and those visors still work today.

Suggest that you file a complaint, it actually may help Hyundai in the long run... before they are sued from this defect causing a death or injury for knowingly having a defective part.

2007 Sonata both visors have failed still under 70,000 miles. The passenger side changed under warranty, it began sagging again a few months after replacement. Yesterday the drivers side made a cracking sound, is now completely hanging down, interfering with my view. I called corporate yesterday and eventually spoke to a case manager in summary: "your out of warranty", despite the fact that I pointed out how peculiar that my VIN was not included in an identical campaign. My hesitation is that if I replace it with their product it will happen yet again.

I had the driver's side sun visor break on my 2007 Sonata. Took to to the dealer and found it was 3 months out of warranty. So I paid the $80 something and installed it myself. Now, 2 weeks later the passenger side one breaks. I going to go to the dealer and complain. In 40+ years of owning cars I've never had this problem before.

I had exacty the same issues as "Blinded In Florida". 1st one on drivers side replaced by dealer, 2nd one broke about a year later, dealer told me I was out of warranty therefore out of luck. I purchased the 2nd on online for less than 1/2 the dealers price and replaced it myself. Now I'm having issues with door handles bracking off! What good is a 100,000 mile 10 year warranty if the rest of the car falls apart which not under warranty? I believe that "Hyundai" in Korean means "Junk".

Simply can't believe this is such a prevelant problem. I had the same experience today on my 2007 Sonata on the drivers side. I had the same snapping, crackle, and pop then loose, hanging visor. It IS a hazzard. Thanks for the info about reporting this, I will do so tomorrow.

I've had the same thing, my driver side broke first. It was replaced for no charge due to being under warranty. My warranty ran out and the passanger side broke. Have tried velcro, super glue, and any other alternative to fix it. Its very annoying and seeing all the post i think that its something that Hyundai should replace anytime for free.

mine just broke - vanity light stayed and and I almost coudn't start my car! - went to my mechanic and had him disconnect the wire from the led light so it won't happen again - I called the dealer, I have 58, 700 miles on the car - she said it couldn't be replaced if it was dealt with roughly! the whole thing snapped, crackle and popped - I put two safety pins on the right side of the visor and straight pinned it into the material - worked like a charm - I wonder why velcro doesn't work?

My wifes 2008 sonata drivers and passangers visors are broke and will not stay up!
contacted customer no service at the dealer ship there is a technical bullatin if vehical has warranty they will replace but only certain manufacture dates and only some states we live in ky and on a trip to florida the visor was broke and i literally could not see the road our vehicle met the manufacture date but was out of warranty so they will not fix because its voluntary and by the way ky does not participate in the technical bullitin.
The only way to get this resolved is a mandatory recall if hyundai will not voluntarlly fix this safty issue its up to us as the consumer to have our voices heard !

I have a 2006 we bought used and the passenger side visor broke on ours. Like others have commented below, i had to remove it. Driver's side still works - for now. We love the car but Hyundai service has been absolutely horrendous!! When i got a "How did we do?" email from them, i professional voiced my feelings - THEY NEVER RESPONDED! I guess they didn't care. What a shame, cause Hyundai is doing so well in other areas, but they are going to loose a lot of customers because they don't take care of them!

I have a 2006 Elantra and two broken visors. I wrote Hyundai and they were "happy to assist me". Their assistance consisted of instructing me to contact a Hyundai service center...really? I should get them fixed? I hadn't thought of that! They never acknowledged a problem or apologized in any manner. I admit one part does not make a car, however, a company's response to dangerous conditions in it's products does make the company.

2007 Sonata, past 60K miles, both broke, the passenger side first (least used). Tried with appealing to Hyundai Corp (even for the cost of one), no satisfaction. They said I could fax a request for reimbursement (will do that with little hope). Fax # is (801) 736-3561. You will need proof of ownership (car reg) and a parts receipt (they also asked for repair order if you have Hyundai install them - easily customer installable). Bummer for Hyundai....I'm buying a new car and they're out of the running although they'll get the $76.03 per visor (pennywise & poundfoolish)

Both of mine are broken and have been for some time on my 2007 Sonata, they barely get used. Hyuandi say's it is a 60,000 mile item. I would think they would be liable if someone actually is involved in an accident as they have obviously been notified by many about this problem.

We have had an 06 Sonata and now we have an 07 sonata. BOTH have had visor issues. Each side broke in both vehicles well before 50,000 miles. Now we have to flip it around and stuff it into the clip which makes the mirror cover sag and start rattling. Also, b/c the cover sags, it makes the vanity lite flicker anytime we hit big bumps!! Other issues we have had with both vehicles is Tail Light failure and T.L. bulbs burning out in a matter of weeks.

Two broken on left side, one on right side. Evidently there have been recalls: T64 and T74 (Technical Service Bulletins) for 2007 Sonata for replacement of BOTH visors. I've just now discovered these TSB's, so we'll see if the local dealer will take care of us. Unfortunately my wife's car has had several things break on the interior beside the sun visors--flip down door on center dash storage compartment, visor mirror cover (though she rarely uses it), and some other thing that I can't recall. Poor quality, evidently. Last night on the O'Reilly Factor, O'Reilly slammed Hyundai for poor service AND poor product quality. His corporate vehicles were Hyundais and have now been replaced by Cadillacs. Jeez, I'm glad I'm not some GM at his Hyundai dealership, or the Service Manager! He slammed them on his show on Monday, 9/12/11.

Toyota wouldn't do this .WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU "HYUNDAI"They won't fix this in Australia either.Lexus had a complaint of a tail light bulb blowing and they recalled 8000 LS400.This is a SAFETY ISSUE! Come on Hyundai get on with before you have a CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT because people have been KILLED. Hyundai wouldn't fix anything else on my car either,even under warranty. eg suspension and drivetrain noises.They were happy to take $550 for an oil change.ie service.Now I do my own for $50.What a RIP OFF.

My 2006 Sonata has the same problem. At first I just pushed it to the side while I would drive but now I just flip it backwards and it locks into the clip. It is very irritating that I cant use it anymore though. This definitely should have been a recall! As for the air bag stickers falling off..mine did that too. They just sent me new stickers to put back onto them. They never offered to replace the visor. If they had, maybe I would have a visor that works!!

has any tried to ripping of the label on the visor that is a recall to see if they will replace visor??? or do they just stick the stick on the broken visor??? i may try that....

OMG! This is too funny reading about all these problems with the sun visor and Hyundai not seeing an issue. This forum was exactly what I was looking for. It's been extremely hot & unusually humid here in Bakersfield, Ca and there was another comment pertaining to the humidity down south and how the visor cracks when it's opened. That's exactly what mine did.

If you live in the southern states, there is a recall to replace the visor because the "Safety Airbag" sticker falls off. So if you live in the South, then peel the sticker then get your visor replaced. I called my dealer since I live in Iowa and they would replace it for $200, called Hyundai and they said to bad it didn't break 3 months ago because it would be covered under warranty, but since I was pass the 5 year by 3 months I would have to work with the Dealer. Lots of help, where is Congress on this? To busy sending pictures on Twitter to their girlfriends!

Add me to the list! Called the dealer and they insist there isn't a problem. Sure I knew that was the answer I was going to get. Anyway, I did some research and found out dealers in the south below Tennessee are supposed to check the cars for this problem. There is a problem with humidity and when it is hot the roll bar inside sticks and cracks when the driver/passenger pulls it down. There is a defect and they surely know about it. It will take someone seriously getting hurt before they do anything about it. It just hope it isn't me or my kid! Shame on Hyundai!!!!

I have the same problem with the broken sun visors on my 06 sonata. There are definitely some safety issues that need to be investigated about these visors. I think the best we can do for the moment is to file a complaint. I've done some research and found that you can is to go to the website: safercar.gov. Click on "Report a vehicle defect" and fill out a "Safety Complaint Portable Form". You will be assigned a temporary complaint number where you can check the status of your form. There is also a Hotline to file your complaint by phone Mon-Fri 8am-8pm at (888)327-4236, TTY (800)424-9153.

My daughter was being blinded by the sun and lowered the sun visor and heard snap,crackle, pop and now it doesn't stay up. Not under warranty!

Someone really needs to contact National,State and Local agencies. This is a HUGE problem that someone is going to get seriously hurt or even worse. If Hyundai wants to act and work like the Big Boys they need to take care of this and fast.

I have a 2006, same problem. Had it replaced 2/08, it was covered by the basic, 5 year - 60k warranty. Just broke again, 4/11, no longer covered. New on will be $73.50, pre paid to order. Not hard to replace, but seeing how many people have had the problem, SHOULD be a recall.

Oh my- I am so shocked!So many with the same problem! I have a 2006 Sonata with a broken driver side visor. I tried the velcro route- doesn't hold up. I think the maget method might work. I have had no other problems and enjoy my car but this is a safety hazard and very frustrating.

I don't know if this will work in all cases but for my 2006 Sonata driver side broken visor I just extend the slide out extension at the end of the visor so that it extends over the rear view mirror. You do have to remember to push the slide out back in before putting the visor down or you mess up your mirror big time but at least it keeps it out of your line of sight.

My passenger side is broken now, and my drivers side was replaced under warranty.

However, every car I have had has had a problem with the visor, not just the hyundai. Just google "sun visor broke". You don't want to assume the rest of the car is bad over one part (for those who said that).

Both of mine broke (2006) I ripped them off. What else could I do? This is a safety issue! I tried the velcro; it worked in cooler weather but when the car got hot in the summer, it just would not work, the adhesive just melted. I like the magnet idea. OR...why doesn't Hyundai just admit their product needs to be recalled. Can we go to the media with this? Has anyone been hurt because of their falling visor???

I have a 2006 and driverside has broken twice. Went to store and fixed with 3.00 dollar velco tape. Refuse to pay to fix it! Works great for Me. :)

I had the same issue in my 2006 Sonata. It recently went out of warranty. I did a few Google searches, and found this posting. I then found a website that sold the new Hyundai part for around $50. I installed it myself and was back to normal in a few minutes.

The visor has 2 phillips head screws that are hidden under a cap, which you can pop off with a flat head screwdriver. You also have to connect the cable to turn on the light when you open the visor mirror. Not too bad, all things considered. I wish they would do a recall on this as well. But for those of you suffering with a floppy visor, here is a relatively inexpensive fix.

Mine driver one snapped today. It falls down some what. I expect it to get worse though. Dealer told me I have an extended warrenty but costs $100 for the dedcutable. Hoping I can use something to fix it temporarliy and get it fixed when something else goes wrong before my 100K warrenty expires since $100 would cover any and all repairs done at one time.

Add me to the list. I have an '06 Sonata. My car was out of warranty when the problem happened. I never got the cracking, it just stopped staying up. The other visor is not far behind; it shakes as I drive. I thought of doing the velcro method, but am going to try slipping some paper matches into the arm where it is connected to the actual visor. I'm hoping this provides some the tension needed. I'm going to NHTSA right now to file my complaint...

My 2006 Sonata visor broke today. It's at about 65,000 miles and this is the first time. Guess I was lucky! I'm going to put the really strong magnets you can buy at craft stores and sew them into little pockets that I'll sew onto the visor and and the roof. Hope this will work and avoid the melting adhesive issue.....

My visor broke also,an I use a small bungy cord hooked to the safety handle above the drivers door.It holds up pretty good.An you can use it to block the sun also.

Add another one with a 2006 Sonata visor failure (second one). Previous replacement under warranty, now out of warranty with the same problem.

I wonder if someone needs to lose control and kill themselves or others before it becomes a permanent recall. Obviously from reading here whatever 'fix' they have is only good enough to last until you are out of warranty and on your own.

Well, I had the EXACT same thing happen to my 2006 Hyundai Sonata 3 times (on both sides) while under warranty...but now it just happened again on the driver side and I am out of warranty. Does anyone know if there is a quick fix for it besides velcro, or do I just have to go out and pay the $100 to get a new one?

Same situation here. 2006 driver's side visor broke under warranty and was fixed. Broke again outside of warranty.

Well, add another Hyundai driver who's both drivers and passanger side visors are broke!! very annoying! Why again is this not a recall??!!

My passenger side (2006 sonata GLS) cracked and broke at 62,000. now the driver side just went out at 64,000 hyundai wants 278 to replace both. I have no problem paying IF they provide a better replacement piece.

I tried Velcro but if you live in a hot weather climate like Florida, in the summer the adhesive on the Velcro just melts and the visor falls anyway. I too am looking for a more permanent solution that doesn't cost $180, that is just ridiculous, come on Hyundai step up, you've had good consumer reports reviews, way to ruin consumer confidence!

I have a 2008 and both my visors flop down and won't stay up! I am so frustrated! I was hoping I would find a solution on here but apparently I am one of many!

This is crazy, come on Hyundai has to know that this is a prob. So everyone that buys this car should just expect this to happen. I ran across this sit and started reading this is the same thing that is going on with my visor. One of my student has an 06 also and she said the samething happened to her car. Hyundai really needs to do something about this. I pretty sure with all of the money that we have spent on buying our cars we don't want to put extra money into them for something that is Hyundai's fault!

2006 Sonata bought in 07. Floppy visor replaced then. Now BOTH drivers and passengers side are floppy. Obviously a design flaw and should be recalled. I agree with Rich - - file a complaint (NHTSA.com is incorrect!!) with the NHTSA at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov (note the DOT is for Department of Transportation! - NOT another '.') This IS definitely a safety issue as the visors block the drivers vision!

Simply use a small piece of velcro tape about the size of a .50 piece for about the same cost; going on a year and a 1/2 with no problem.

same thing for me . driver side went under 60000 and they fixed for free. now passanger side went have 72000 on it and was quoted a price of 145 dollars . you have got to be sinme. this will make me a repeat costumer "not"

my driver side sun visor has cracked and will not stay up or stay forward on the windshield--just dangles in my line of sight. yes the dealer will get one at $75--based on the number of complaints i have read the company should replace them or at least reduce the cost for the customer.

I have a 2006 Accent GLS, and while I was trying to adjust my sun visor, I heard a cracking sound, and now the thing won't stay up!
To add insult to injury, the vanity light now does not work!

My husband has an '06 Sonata, and both the visors on it have broken. He's had the driver's side visor replaced (It was still under warranty), but the plastic appears to be cracking around the edge where the metal bar enters the visor, leaving sharp edges exposed.
I agree with a previous poster's suggestion to try some Velcro ®- I'm going to do that, as well as find a clip-on light fixture.

Better that than shell out $100 and have the dang thing break again!

NHTSA will not require a recall without a substantial number of complaints.
I would suggest everyone file a complaint with NHTSA.com

2006 Sonata LX. Mine (both L and R) were replaced under warranty, but now out of warranty and L broken again. I'm seriously thinking about cutting the thing open with a razor blade and seeing if I can fix it. On my 2nd set of sunvisors for the 2006 sonata. how many times does it need to break before the problem becomes a recall? more than an obvious defect.

My sunvisor has broken for the 3rd time on 2006 Hyundai Sonata. This time it cost me close to $100. This is a huge rip-off. I agree my car is out of Warranty but this is a design/maufacturing defect. There are complaints all over the internet for same issue. This should be on recall list. It is a safety problem. When mine dropped down, I nearly ran off road. I pushed it to side and had no visibility to side mirror.

This has also happened to my 2007 Sonata 4 times now! This last time is 3000 out of warranty. It's obviously a factory defect.

The Sun Visor of my 2006 GLS just did the same thing. It wouldn't go all the way up and then it just gave up the fight and dangles. I called the dealership and it is under warranty, 5 yr or 50k miles. Too bad I have 72k miles on it. So, the part cost $134. :(

i had the same problem. i pulled down the visor and when i put it back up, it started cracking, so it was obviously broke. its going to be costly to replace...im going to pull it off and try and fix it myself, however another way to just fix it if you dont want to pay the money is to put a small piece of velcro on the visor and then on where the visor rests. ghetto but it beats paying a ton of $$

We also have the same problem. My wife was lowering the visor and heard a clicking noise followed by a snapping sound. From that time on, the visor would not stay in position. Ours is a 2006 Sonata. I called the dealer service department this morning and they said that it was a warranty item that they will replace. The man said he had to check to see if they had any in stock and that he would call me back. This is the first time I have dealt with the Hyundai dealer service department. It is also the first time I have ever had a problem with a sun visor on a car - strange.

Oh my gosh - I have a 2006 and the same thing has happened to mine. I believe it should be covered under warranty since it is installed by the manufacturer and has not held up to normal use. However I am calling the dealer tomorrow to make sure.
