Humax pvr9200t picture freeze?

Picture freezes as soon as I switch on Humax 9200t recorder. I am unable to use any remote or machine functions. Recorder is about 2 years old.

So glad for the suggestion from ST. It fixed my 7500T problem. By removing the antenna cable and thus the signal it stopped the device from crashing and rebooting so that I could do the reset to factory defaults. Seems to work fine now.

I was having problems with my Humax PVR also with it keep freezing and it would only clear when I rebooted it, which I cannot any longer do because of major surgery and I cannot bend to get to the plugs or switches.
I looked on this website and saw that it was quite a common problem and found a possible answer as I scrolled down.
I copied and pasted it into a Word document and asked mt Son if he could carry out the instructions for me, which he did and it solved the problem by putting it back to default settings and I did not lose anything that I had previously recorded either.
Needless to say I am delighted with the answer who came from "ST".
This was done about 2 months ago now and it was only lasting one recording session when rebooting it, so I am well pleased.
Thank you very much ST, as mine was on the point of hitting the bin!!! You saved it's bacon and me a lot of money, many thanks to you.
Please give it a try, like I did and you may be presently surprised if it works as well for you as it has for me

I followed Humax's instructions because my PVR9200 freezes after just a few seconds when they recommended to remove the aerial and go to installation to reboot but I can only get to the menu page before it freezes and I don't have the time to go down to installation, any ideas? Humax now tells me it's impossible for this to happen if the aerial is out!!

My Humax was freezing and I tried the solution posted by "Angrycustomer" and "Dave_uk". Thanks for the tip, it worked a treat, my Humax is up and running normally again. I was nearly going out today to buy a new PVR for ÂŁ129. Thank goodness for forums.

Hello. I'd like to add that I spent many hours researching this problem, and talking to Humax tech support. I'm very technically competent but I never found a satisfactory solution that worked for any length of time. I cannot believe this product is still on the market given the length of time this problem had been known about.

I too suffered with the screen freezing and found this useful post online, I followed the instructions and the pvr9200t has stopped freezing it all appears to be fixed :)

Please follow the steps below to perform a Default reset;

Power OFF the receiver
Disconnect the Aerial cable
Power On the receiver
Press MENU
Select Installation
Enter your password (default = 0000)
Select Default Setting
Select YES
Enter your password (Default = 0000)
When the receiver restarts, power off
Connect the Aerial Cable
Power ON – the receiver will then search for the channels.
I hope it works for you too. Enjoy.

I think that Humax software sucks. It is nearly as bad as Sky, with inherrent problems. Works OK for a while then sucks again. Why can't they leave it alone. If it works stop trying to fix it.

I tried all the quick fixes and they all varied between partial/temporary solution to no solution at all.

I decided to bite the bullet and download the latest firmware from Humax and install. It's much less awful to do than you would think.

Now- all is perfect!

Had the same problem yesterday, had to keep restarting and changing channel in the short amount of time that you have (using the channel button on the PVR itself for speed) until I found a channel that did not freeze. Thats all that I did, been ok since.

Had exactly the same problems and was almost giving up as I had tried all the suggestions made by others without any success or improvements. Was about to try the download approach via a computer and cables, but then looked up the schedule for future over-air download updates for different PVRs (www.dtg.org.uk/industry/download_schedule.php). As luck would have it the next download for the PVR9200T was last week (software version 23). Hence set the PVR to download at allotted time, and new version downloaded immediately. All has been perfect since and you also get a lot of useful software improvements. Keep an eye on the dtg web-site therefore for the next download.

I have solved my problem. I kept swithching off and than on and then trying a new channel until I found one that didn't lock up (sky) then I went through the usuual process to reset and retune. Everything's fine now.

My Humax has just started feezing again. I always leave it on standby so I assume I have all the updates. I tried the on/off/aerial routine which worked 18 months ago but it now freezes after about 20 seconds so I don't have time to get past putting in 0000. Is there no 'reset button'?

Ahhh!!! I've been waiting patiently for this update and now when i try the OTA upload I get an error message E-OS. This isn't in my manual - does anyone have any ideas what to do to fix this?

I think the instructions are all there...
- you will need a serial port on your PC (or a USB to serial port) and a serial RS-232 cable (cannot remember whether it is straight of null modem at the moment).
- after reprogramming, I think that you have to do a reset, it retunes, and will loose your recording schedule (but the recordings themselves will be OK).

Is there any way to get the next version of software without waiting for the OTA? My Humax is on v 21 and driving me demented. Was about to bin it and buy something else when I saw this website.

The USB looks like an obvious way to update the software, but the Humax cannot do it that way. You have to use the Serial port on the Humax and a NULL modem cable (if your PC does not have a serial port, you will need a USB to serial pod as well).

You have said that you have left it on... it must be in standby to do an Over The Air update (i.e. powered on but turned off via the front or remote control switch). Next OTAs for 1.00.23 at the end of December

OK this is annoying, the procedure that worked in August for me, is not working now, I've tried the reset several times and I am now trying the manual selection on my 9200t but it's really slow.

Can I do the update from http://humaxfreezefixlochinver.yolasite.com/ via a USB cable or do I need an RS 232C Null Modem cable. I've had my machine set to automatic OTA updates and left it on and still it's nver taken any of the 7 previous broadcasts of the .23 update, so I am still on .21

Don't worry about MUX1/PSB1. Just make sure that your Humax has power on but in standby mode each night and it should update itself during the night. If it hasn't done so during Friday night, then try forcing a manual update at any time during the Friday to Sunday transmission window. Hope that will do the trick.

I am only just catching up on this thread. My PVR9200T is on automatic update but still has s/w PGXTF1.00.21 - and its problems.

I see the next download* is Fri 24/9 10.00 to Sun 26/9 midnight. on MUX1/PSB1. Whats that about?

Thanks for this post; funny there has been a run of these problems I did the following yesterday evening and it worked for me also.

1. Power OFF the receiver

2. Disconnect the Aerial cable

3. Power On the receiver

4. Press MENU

5. Select Installation

6. Enter your password (default = 0000)

7. Select Default Setting

8. Select YES

9. Enter your password (Default = 0000)

10. When the receiver restarts, Standby, then Power OFF

11. Connect the Aerial Cable

12. Power ON - the receiver will then search for the channels.

However I was wondering about OTA updates. my Software version is 4.0.9a - how do I know if it has successfully got the latest version?

Hi. Yep, I experienced yesterday the picture freeze with my old Humax (160 Gb disc). It could work only about 30 seconds before it got frozen. I had suspected the worst before I found this simple recipe. Worth repeating the instruction –
- Unplug the aerial
- Turn Humax On
- Go to Menu / Installation (0000) - /Default Setting (0000)
- Plug the aerial back in so that the channels can be found and re-allocated./ Save.
Recording schedule had to be amended as well.
Thanks for the advice, and keep posting the tips.

Sorry to hear about your problems. This won't help any but my own occasional problems haven't repeated so maybe there's another issue emerging here. I really did think the Humax people had got it bottomed... Batteries in the r/c OK?

Is the firmware download still available - try again although that shouldn't really be necessary?

my humax has started freezing again, it was fine for a while after the download but in the last few days it's been a nightmare. Is anyone else getting this or is it just me?

As Bob McMillan reports, I also experienced a similar 'freeze' a couple of nights back when I went to delete a recorded programme I'd watched. Powering off then on with the mechanical switch sorted out that problem but I'd also thought that the response to the remote control had been slow on occasion recently. Very hard to be objective as sometimes I don't point the r/c accurately but after the recent system upgrade the r/c response had been immediate and astoundingly quick.

I HOPE nothing is beginning to go wrong, though, as my unit has been fabulous after the software upgrade and I'd hate to return to how things were before.....

I had my first “Lockup” last night with the new software. BBC1 was recording and I was watching a previously recorded program. When it finished I went in to the recorded programs menu to delete it and on pressing the red “Delete” button the recorder ceased responding to the remote control. I left if for three hours and it did not release so I had to switch it off and on again at the wall socket to reset it.

Having just spent most of the morning looking at replacement PVR's I am really pleased I found this website. 5 minutes and the 'freezing' problem appears to be fixed - at least for now. Many thanks for all the great advice, practical help and technical input, all I need to do now is sort out the vacuum cleaner!!!

Thank you to all who contribute to this site - I have solved my freezing problem using your advice - I worked fast because freezing was occurring after about 20 seconds but once I had started setting to defaults it all went through. By the way, I checked the http://www.dtg.org.uk/industry/download_schedule.php site and see there is another issue of the PGXTF 1.00.23 update between 23-06-10 10.00 am to 25-06-10 9.00 am for the 9200 and 25-06-10 10.00 - 27-06-10 midnight for the 9300. I missed the last one so will remember to leave on. I too have missed recordings and hope the update will cure that.

I had two problems: freezing (which I've up to now dealt with by unplugging and plugging back in, but I'll try the reset option given here) and failure to record. It's the latter which drove me to google "humax pvr problems". The recordings were all definitely in the schedule (and indeed stay in the schedule after the date of recording until you delete them). At a guess, the PVR fails on one recording in 15 or 20: a bit too often to carry on ignoring. Many thanks to all the technical experts for sharing their knowledge with the rest of us.

My 9200t finally (for the first time in over 3 years) found an OTA software update. Now, all freezing problems have gone. When I press a button on the remote, it responds straightaway! Astonishing progress.

OTA update

Since writing my earlier comments, and while continuing to mess around with settings, I found the EPG eventually became populated for most channels for the week ahead.

It took quite some time but it isn't a problem like earlier because the EPG won't have to be rebuilt from scratch each time after powering down. What a relief.

OTA download worked. RC responsiveness is fine. EPG (with all surplus services deleted as before) is quick to appear after switch on now - as promised.

I left the unit for ages to populate the EPG but still patchy details after next few days - maybe not all programme info. is transmitted so far ahead? Never took much notice before...

After recommended auto retuning 800 service range has now disappeared, BBC 1 and 2 back where they belong on channel numbers 1 and 2 .

Hoping I haven't lost anything which I have yet to notice - anyone experienced anything nasty?

Finally....a new update to v23 OTA! Feels faster and definitely an improvement. No sluggishness so far so need to buy a new box but was tempted to upgrade to the phillips HD version! ;P

Interesting, if the 9200 is showing that 800 is on Ch52 what is you 1 showing as? Having picked a new postcode nearer to you (NG19 9LE), I would guess that it is Belmont on Ch30.
I am lucky, I can see the transmitter on a clear day (20 miles away). I get 89% signal. However, we have completed switchover (analogue has been turned off) and at that point transmission power is increased. You can see this for Emley Moor when the Mux A reception predictions improving from the present 89/91% to 99/99% at Step 1 (above the little green bars).

Yes, you are reading the table correctly, I just suggested Halifax because that is the only alternative for the postcode that I had, as you say, that is not actually available until next year.

I think we are getting rather off topic with discussions of your specific problems. Keep this forum for 9200 upgrade issues but if you want to discuss multiplexes or manual retuning further, it will be easier (and we can discuss actual postcodes) if we use e-mail so interpret this if you want to contact me alan dot p dot brown at hotmail dot co dot uk.

thanks Alan - I've been studying your earlier and latest messages together. My postcode (NG19) shows 52+ as the channel number for my multiplex.

In your example, channel 24, the Halifax transmitter, is listed for next year, 2011 - am I reading the table correctly?

I must be thick as I found the table hard to follow with all the multiplexes listed - I don't know what each column represents but, then, I don't have a TV-technical background.

23 due to be delivered soon - I set the auto timer for midday - fingers crossed.

I followed your last directions and found the channel is shown as 52 which corresponds to the MUX 1/ BBC A as you suggested. Its signal strength is only 40 to 43% - will that ever improve or am I close to the effective operating boundary and that's as strong as it ever will be?

800s most often come from the second transmitter in the list. Try this... hopefully channel 800 is BBC1, select it. Press the MENU button and select System, Signal Detection. The channel number shown is the Multiplex. See if this matches the "MUX 1/BBC A" (which is the multiplex for BBC1) entry for any of the transmitters shown for your postcode. Now you should know which transmitter is giving you your good signals. In the case of the example postcode that I used, I would have expected you to have found 24, which would match up with the Halifax transmitter.

curiouser and curiouser.... thanks for the further info.

I'd seen something, somewhere, about the 800 channel group but couldn't find it again - often happens to me when I don't realise I need to bookmark the web page...

For the moment the 800 channel group on the Humax is saving my bacon but I'll follow the link you've given to learn about the multiplexers. This is likely to be at the limit of my technical understanding and I'll first see if it will help me to tune the TV - it's only that which is a problem at present. Wherever the 800 channel group originates, it's allowing us to watch and record BBC TV through the Humax unit and I daren't risk losing those channels by messing around until I'm clear what I'm trying to achieve.

What you've described with unresponsiveness to the remote is broadly in line with what we were experiencing. I don't recall when I first noticed how bad the response to the remote controller had become but it was probably around mid to late April - we'd been away all winter so I didn't even know the Emley Moor situation until I searched online. Certainly the selection had been marked for recording using the EPG to select but I never tried manually switching on so I haven't any experience on that point. It's a great shame because when the Humax works properly it's a good device - when it doesn't it's infuriating!

Post DSO, I also tried removing unwanted channels, took it down to about 12TV and no radio. For me it had some benefit, but still not great. In addition, my EPG wouldn't go beyond 3 days ahead, however long you left it.

I don't know if it is still the case, but channels in the range 800 have historically been blamed for recording problems. These channels mean that auto tuning has managed to pick up stations from more than one transmitter. As a result, I always use manual tuning. This isn't as bad as it sounds, you just need to know the channel numbers of the 6 multiplexes on your local transmitter; there are 10 to 20 stations per multiplex and they are sorted automatically.
Go here http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/postcodechecker/ put in your details and tick the "trade aerial installer". The results page will show you possible transmitters and the probabilities of receiving. Look at the "Coverage Prediction" for "Now" for the 6 multiplexes.
For a near Emley Moor (HD80LF, 12, Trade)...

The results page shows multiplexes 52, 40, 46, 43, 50, 49. You will probably find that 43 won't actually give you any new stations. Note that to do this you would have to delete your existing channels first and this would clear your recording schedule.

As for 23...
These recording failures are something different from anything that I have seen in the past. I have only had 3 instances, so not a lot to go on, but in each case the programme was marked in the EPG and listed in the schedule, just changing the channel caused the recording to start. I just don't have enough to go on to add anything more helpful.
It has to be said, that running 21 after DSO made my 9200 impossible at times with it taking 40 seconds to respond to commands and often freezing completely. I often dare not watch anything while recording for fear of the freeze wrecking the recording. Compared to that 23 is a huge improvement, I just wish that this little problem wasn't there instead.
The forums show a number of people who have not experienced any problems with 23, only time will tell.

Alan, I took another look at your short, earlier posting before studying again your 'failure to record' account. It's very puzzling.....

On occasion we've found that recordings haven't been successful after we thought we'd scheduled them but always assumed it was 'operator error'!

Has the problem been made worse or not been affected by the beta download which is set to go OTA this week?

Having a stored EPG will be very useful compared with the 15 minutes or so it used to take to load every time after switching on...

I say "used to" because after following another tip here I deleted all the channels we never watch anyway, plus radio channels, and found that made a big difference to responsiveness.

At one time it was a huge inconvenience when the unit had been turned off - often briefly by mistake - and then we had to wait (it felt like forever!) to do anything at all. I don't like leaving it on all the time but found there was little choice...

Now we have to use the Humax for watching live TV as often we cannot get BBC's DAB channels (sometimes analogue too) whilst this infernal digital-changeover business is underway on Emley Moor's transmitter. Luckily the Humax has a set of channels around the 800 range which the TV can't tune so we watch BBC TV through the Humax's tuners. I don't understand that but am grateful it works!! If you could shed any light on that situation I'd be very interested to learn about what's happening?

I answered that briefly a few posts down.
However, my findings are this (other people's experience may, of course, vary).

The new EPG works very well. When you first use this new version, it will take 30 minutes to populate the EPG. However, when turned off, you will hear it spend about 20 seconds writing the EPG to disk. When you next turn on the EPG will be reloaded in about 20 seconds (the unit will function normally while this is happening).

Responsiveness is generally good with no noticeable delay, but on odd occasions there are still delays of a 15 seconds (but I haven't seen any as long as the 40 seconds that I saw with the previous version).

The down-side that I have observed and reported to Humax is an occasional failure to record. On 3 occasions, I have seen that the REC indicator has not come on when I have expected a recording. Each time I have turned the unit on. Coincidentally (?) each time the channel that I had selected previously (and hence when I turn it back on) has not been the channel that would be recording. If I now switch to the expected channel, the recording immediately starts. This said, I have made at least 30 successful recordings. From reports that I have seen, a number of people using the new version have not seen this problem (that may just be a matter of "yet" of course).

Quite depressing that the 'fix' isn't quite the total fix we'd hoped for. Are there any major issues - still problems with a lack of responsiveness?

Automatic update is normally on by default. The unit needs to be in standby to perform the update (i.e. turned off using the remote control so that just the time is showing).

To see your current version press MENU and select System, Status. Your SOFTWARE VERSION is probably PGXTF 1.00.21 (the new one is probably going to be PGXTF 1.00.23). Use left and/or EXIT buttons to get out.

If you want to check the automatic update settings...
press the MENU button and select Installation (password should be 0000) and Software Update. The 3rd and 4th lines should say REGULAR AUTO UPDATE ENABLED and SEARCH TIME 04:00. If you want to force an update attempt (between 10am Wed 9th June to 09am Fri 11th June), use the first line (AUTOMATIC UPDATE).

I already have 1.00.23 and there are some problems with it, but a lot of improvements as well.

Had terrible problems with my two and a half year old 9200t. Complained to the shop where I purchased it - John Lewis at Cribbs Causeway, Bristol. Had a nice call from Audio and TV Dept Assistant Amanda Starr who asked me to take the box in because John Lewis technical dept had developed their own solution. Left it with them for ten minutes while they downloaded software. Back home now and after a week it is working perfectly. It's fast, EPG repopulates quickly and a joy to use -just like new!!. Have written to thank John Lewis which is a store that offers fantastic customer service. Usually buy my electrical stuff there because the staff are so brilliant. Do not know if my solution will suit everyone and do not know if all John Lewis stores offer this service but if anyone is interested try Amanda Starr at John Lewis on 01179591100

This just happened to my probably four year old box. Found this forum and tried the resetting fix with the aerial out. Seems to have worked. I will wait for the a couple of weeks to see if the OTA fix appears before attempting the do it yourself firmware upgrade. If I didn't live several hundred miles away I'd be round to Mike's with a bottle tonight. Great detective work with a reluctant supplier. Well done

I went to http://humaxfreezefixlochinver.yolasite.com as recommended by Mike Rochester . The Flash9200.exe worked fine with software from Humax (PGXTF 1.00.21).

The only problem was of my own making, I picked up a straight through RS232 in error for a null modem version. After I cut it open and reconnected it to teach myself a lesson ( always read the label !) the programmes worked OK.

Wow! They are a brilliant explanation and set of instructions - you've put in some work there!

It's interesting to learn what's been going on.

I'm going to try the surplus channel deletion route for the time being and wait for the OTA update. If that never happens at least I'll have a fall-back if necessary. And I won't have to mess about with cabling if OTA does work!

The problem stems from the onboard memory dedicated to the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) being overwhelmed by the amount of info now being transmitted since Digital Switch Over (DSO). Starting from cold the EPG memory is empty ... so your PVR works OK, but it gets progressively worse/slower as the memory fills up, eventually stalling when the EPG memory is full, which could explain why deleting unwanted channels helps.

I gave up expecting Humax to deliver an upgrade over the air (OTA) so, with some trepidation, resorted to the PC-Cable Beta-Firmware option ... and it has worked brilliantly, aided significantly by a cracking piece of privately produced software called FLASH9200 which simplifies and demystifies the whole business.

The problem is that all the various elements and bits of advice you need are scattered about and are sometimes contradictory. I've created one site where I've pulled together all that is needed to get the job done, just basic advice for the non-techno-guru Humax sufferer as to where to get an explanation / software / firmware / cable.

I'm no genius but am willing to have a go... and would recommend that you do too. My 9200T is now a joy to use and it took less time to run the upgrade than it has to type this note.

I would support the deleting channels approach. My 9200 was behaving terribly after the DSO, and no amount of resetting and tuning it to a single transmitter was helping. However having tuned to a single transmitter and deleting all the channels I never watch (including all the radio ones in my case), the box is now at least workable.

It's still slow occasionally, and will sometimes hang up for a few seconds or more, but to date (touch wood) it hasn't crashed totally for several weeks. And recordings seem to be working normally as well. Based on this i think i'm going to try and hold on for an OTA update rather than trying to load the beta version, but that resolve may weaken if it doesn't turn up soon!

My 9200 has been terrible. Have tried lots of the suggestions, with varying degrees of success. One that does help somewhat is to delete unwanted channels.
More importantly, Humax had asked for beta testers (via their Facebook page). I received the beta today (18-May-2010). So far, there have been no problems.
So for those that can reload a 9200, get onto the beta test. For the rest; the end is in sight.

I reformatted the hard drive and it didn't work. No respnse to the email I sent humax either. Loved the machine until DSO now I feel like throwing out the window...if I could afford to buy an alternative.. can any one out recommend another make that's as easy to use

Just found this on the 'Which' website!!

"Please note: The recent digital retune caused some problems that affected the following Humax models - PVR-9200T, PVR-9300T and PVR-9150T. This manifested itself as an unresponsive remote control and/or a freezing picture. Humax have now transmitted an over-the-air software update to fix this on the PVR-9300T and PVR-9150T models. An update to fix the PVR-9200T will be available soon. These software updates are also available to download from their website www.humaxdigital.com/uk. The Humax customer helpline number is 0844 669 8800 if you have any queries."

when you turn off your tv, make sure it's NOT on a bbc station - itv3 will do. - only bbc seems to freeze. if it does freeze, just turn off at the wall plug and straight back on. you will need to check your recording schedule is ok but i find it works.

I've just spoken to Humax (17/5/10 at 14.00). 'Mark' says that the s/w is still in beta testing, but delivery is expected 'imminently' - although he refused to give me date. They are sticking to the 2 year warranty line for return/replacement which I requested but I'm about to write to Which? magazine (for whom it was a Best Buy) to ask if Humax can make this stick. My argument is that it was still in warranty when the download was first promised (December 2009) but it's Humax's fault that it's out of warranty now. Mark says there's no guarantee that any new unit will work 'cos it's running beta software. Gee, thanks.

I'm regularly experiencing slow responses and freezes etc.

I'd like to try the workaround suggested and return the unit to factory default settings but can I be sure that all my stored recordings won't get wiped?

Could disk fragmentation be exacerbating other problems? Has anyone tried re-formatting the hard disk? If so, was anything achieved?

Failing all the above, I'll have to wait for the patch if the Humax staff ever sort things out - what a crock and yet the 9200-T was a Which? best buy...

I had the freeze issue with the 9200t at the first switch over, however as iv'e had the box for two years thought it was a good opportunity to get the 9300T500GB. Silly i know as i had the same thing with that box too. after many calls to the helpline and following instructions to the letter i was no better off so i sent the system back. I am now operating with my 9200 again, and nothing seems to cure the freeze problem, even following the advice below. Humax should remove the systems from the shops until they have this problem solved.

After writing to Humax with a formal complaint they eventually agreed to email the beta software. I would suggest anyone out there tearing their hair out should request this from Humax too. A null modem cable costs a few quid (< ÂŁ3 from Micro Direct). I've yet to test the software but the results from others sound promising - best of luck

Good luck Steve, hope the fix lasts forever although I feel that if this was likely Humax would not be bothering with a long awaited software update. I tried the suggested 'aerial out' procedure some time ago any improvement soon went away. The Radio/telly newsletter website is running a similar forum, some contributors have suggested the 'freezing' problem may be variable dependent one where one lives, also 'age' is mentioned; not the age of the Humax owner, but the age of the unit itself.

Guys/Gals - many thanks for all postings here, thought my Humax was a goner until I read these postings. The entries that RH, DKW and others put up sorted for me, I've copied them below:

Switch on or if it's frozen switch off at the mains and on again.
Press Menu
Installation and enter password - 0000
Select 'Default Setting' and OK
Select 'YES' and OK to restore all settings to factory default.
Confirm again to start loading, enter the password again and it will start scanning for channels but won't find any.
Replace the aerial and press OK to rescan and now it will find channels. On completion press SAVE then EXIT on your keypad.
You won't lose any saved programmes but you will have to re-schedule your recordings.

Since my previous posts I contacted Trading Standards who advised I contact Humax Direct and John Lewis (I have two 9200Ts) by mail. My letter to John Lewis was acknowledged without comment, no acknowledgement from Humax. Several days later I reminded both via email, with a copy to Trading Standards. This was effective. John Lewis consider that as the problem is 'Clearly the fault of the DSO' they do not consider themselves liable in any way. I'm not so sure they're on firm ground with this response however the response I had from Humax was encouraging. They arranged to swap out the 9200T I had bought from Humax Direct with one with the Beta version software, it was delivered to my door in a pretty pink box and the courier took mine away. I am happy to say that although the EPG takes a long time to load I have only had one instance of the thing 'freezing' which I had to clear by using the power switch at the back, otherwise it works as it should. I have emailed Humax to suggest that as the 'final solution' software does not seem to be forthcoming, they should broadcast the Beta version NOW to put people out of their misery. I copied that email to trading Standards, as yet no response from anyone. I shouldn't think Humax are in a position to replace everybody's 9200T as they did for me, John Lewis it seems are not prepared to do anything, however I still believe that owners are justified in a refund, albeit partial. If I managed to get a refund I think I would use it to buy one of these new '3view' PVRs which cope with 'Freeview HD'. The suggestion by Humax that people should download the Beta version to their PC and then connect with a RS 232 cable is in my opinion not on. I have pointed out to Humax that few PCs now have a RS232 outlet, few of us have the means of making up a cable, and not everyone has a PC. I would not want to risk it myself; if anything should go wrong during the PC to Humax transfer I would probably end up with no software at all! One aspect the Beta version has not addressed is the failure of the PVR to switch itself off after the non-existent OTA update at 0400, with all my units I have at times detected that the disc is running. As such I have changed the auto update time, for non-existent update, to 0700. When I get up I lay my hand on the top of the PVR to check whether it has switched off OK, if not I switch on and off again. I've included 'as much detail as possible', hopefully not too much.

I have no answer. The recorded service advice was that update would be available 1 February - it is now 4 May - praps they meant 2011.

I have emailed humax and John Lewis who recommend and are still selling the machines.

Don't faint, I had an immediate response from Humax to an email I sent them this morning!!!

"Unfortunately we cannot confirm a date of when this will be updated. A later beta trial software has proven to solve the issue so we need to finalise this software and we will be able to update the software OTA."

I would follow advice below and contact your Local Trading Standards. I've have just come off the phone now 27/4/10 1130 to be told by their customer support that they do not have a time for the fix. This follows 3 previous email replies stating they did and it would be transmitted in february, then early march then 'within the next 2-3 weeks' needless to say nothing happened. At best they are incompetent, at worst these are failing to be honest. Either way let's pile on the pressure by complaining to the company, Trading Standards and Consumer programmes eg. Watchdog. They will have to do something eventually

Has anyone ever had the 9200t turning itself off everytime you press any button on the remote. You can change channel on the front of the machine but press any button on the humax and its off.

My Humax was working perfectly following problems after the DSO before this latest one in April. Because I can receive transmissions from Mendip and Wenvoe transmitters I had to do a manual tune in order to get the channels I preferred - ie Mendip not the Welsh channels.
Before April I followed the instructions from Humax and did a default with aerial removed followed by a manual tune using the channels for Mendip. This worked perfectly until the latest changes in April. Having carried out the same process I'm now getting the slow response and freezing problems that I had before.

Tried to contact Humax but was 10th in the queue so gave up.

Further to previous , and having read it with greater effort I realise I was premature as according to the DTG website there is no update for 9200T scheduled at all so there's no point in contacting Humax to tell them it doesn't work; the update doesn't even exist.

At Last! I thought,having read the previous post. I went through the rigmarole to carry out the auto search and surprise surprise, the usual messsage, No New software Found, OK. Not OK in my opinion, I'll email Humax support as advised and will be surprised to get a reply at all, but if any I expect it will tell me that the update will be ready "within the next two weeks". It would be interesting to learn whether ANYONE has had success in obtaining an update??

I've tried the RH method today, sadly there is no improvement. I have received a phone call from the Trading Standards office today, they seem to think that there is a case to answer and have suggested I write to the suppliers of my 9200Ts, advising me what details need to be included, and await further developments. Yes, my Humax 9200t keeps freezing up and I have emailed Humax three times in the last 6 months and the software upgrade is always imminient but it nevers seems to happen. I see that they are re-transmitting the upgrade for the 9150 and 9300 and I wonder if they are going to bother doing the 9200 given it's an old STB. It's a shame as it's a good device apart from the freezing but it's pretty poor that they haven't bothered to issue a fix

Further to my previous post I have sent an email to my local Trading Standards Authority office as I have come to the conclusion that the 'Update in two weeks' is akin to the sign in a pub; 'Free Beer Tomorrow' and these PVRs are never likely to work properly and should be subject to free replacement. It seems that approaching Trading Standards locally is the correct procedure, perhaps if a few more were to do it someone may take notice?

My Humax has been frozen several times - kept switching it off at the back and on again, then after few mins froze again. So frustrating. Tried the solution of taking aerial out, default, etc and retune just now - 10 mins later, husband just called out "It's frozen again"!!!

Humax have been putting out information to the effect that an OTA software update will cure this problem, they blame it upon the fact that they were not given correct information regarding DSO. Unfortunately we have been waiting for this software update for far too long and one cannot help but wonder if it will ever appear. Perhaps the Trading Standards people should become involved as it is clear that the 9200T is 'not fit for purpose' and perhaps should be subject to a product recall, or even replacement? Many people blame their remote control; when the freeze occurs the buttons on the front of the machine are equally useless so don't throw the remote at the wall, or the wife. I have sent a message to the BBC Watchdog programme, the programme is due for another run starting this month, I don't hold up much hope as I doubt if anyone at the BBC knows what a PVR is! It is clear that none of them ever watch TV, if they did we wouldn't have to put up with this inappropriate and un-necesary background music to documentary programmes, but I digress...

After DSO, had freezing problems, remote control delay and recorded programs listing oddly. Went through recommended steps and above problems seem to have gone away, but we have now lost all our recorded programs!!!! The disc is still showing that it is over half full however, so wondering if we can still recover them. Any ideas?

Many many thanks. After digging old TV out, and remotes, and considering dumping the 2 y.o. 9200, I put "Humax not working" into Google, came up with this fix, and works perfectly. I've done same with my Central Heating, various computers, Apple devices, Google (and perhaps other search engines) is indispensable. I suspect now that my sister dumped her 9200 unnecessarily last year !

Box was fine Saturday night, Sunday morning noticed it had switched itself on for possible OTA update. Box would not respond to remote, so switched power off then on (back of box), booted ok, picture froze after 20 seconds.
Problem was fixed by unpluging aerial, set default mode, and retune - all is fine.

Excellent. The remote has had a delay for about a week and the the freezing started today. Checked this page on line, disconnected the aerial, and followed alsoh's steps above (nov 2009) BUT couldn't get the multplex bit. So I went for an automatic search with the aerial reconnected. Took 4-5 minutes and it worked.
Must reconnect the aerial for the channel search.
Hopefully not back to square 1 tomorrow

Thanks so much to everyone for their answers, I couldn't understand why I couldn't even make it through through the menu without it freezing but its because you have to take the aerial out first. I find I have this problem if I go away for a couple of weeks and I don't use it. It still manages to record though which is handy!

Hi - I did all this and it fixed the freeze beautifully. But first I lost all sound - which came back when I unplugged and then re plugged arial but as the sound came back the picture went green. I've got about 12 hours before my husband wants to look at the TV ( he's an electronics engineer but refuses to have anything to do with household appliances ) ...any idea how to fix this before then ?

I was getting it freezing within seconds of starting up

I did the following steps
- took out the aerial
- went to the default settings in the menu to re-initialise the box
- put aerial in
- re-scanned channels
and it all works again!

I have a similar issue with freezing. when I turn tv on in the morning the pvr has frozen. I find that none of my scheduled recordings have recorded overnight. Has anyone else had this problem?

I live on the border of the winter hill area and the north wales transmiiter area. When an auto program search is done the welsh channels ( 58 ) are found before the north west channels, so the north west ones cannot be stored. The solution is to auto search with the arial unplugged which clears all the channels, then manual tune the channels you want.

I received a graded PVR-9200T just last week direct from Humax. After spending all weekend trying to get it to work right, it kept freezing on one channel or would not stop when you want it to after rewind or fast forward. The epg froze up and it wouldnt do anything. I phoned Humax today to let them know and found a recorded message as soon as the phone was answered saying Humax is aware of problems such as this with various models and a software upgrade will be available soon to correct this. If I had been told about this before I ordered it I would not have bought it. As I said to them, I dont want to wait till an upgrade is ready,I need one that works now so I have requested a refund.

Hi all,

Just wanted to say a BIG THANKS to Alsho (Nov_09), although the TV channels were found on other number multiplexes than the ones he mentioned (I am in South East London), I have after searching every one of the multiplexes from 22 to 69 and saving the TV channels now got my PVR working again.

Don't throw your 9200T out just yet. It's a great box when it works and that has been most of the time for me (Winter Hill region) until the latest DSO fiasco. The problem is not Humax's. If the digital standards had been defined correctly in the first place we wouldn't be in this mess. Humax are working on a solution. I got this email today:

"Hi,

There is a new software update coming out for the unit within the next 2 weeks or so, please check the website or re-email in to keep an updated for a specific date which should be released within this week.

I think that means there will be a fix soon ... but why not phone them anyway & make them realise how many of us are suffering.

Cured it by mains off for a couple of minutes.

Emailed Humax and they immediately responded with the advice to switch off, unplug the aerial and then switch on again and start again in default mode.
It all worked, but, the channels are not now in the same places they used to be, nor are they on the digital TV. I suspect the changeover is at fault.

those in the WINTER HILL FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING

When the aerial is connected the PVR can receive broadcast, which contains data that confuses it.
Whilst aerial is disconnected * and you have control, do a "defaults setting" from the menu. You should then find it will tune in and function normally.

* Humax procedure includes switching off power to the PVR whenever connecting or disconnecting the aerial. Whilst the chance of not doing so damaging the PVR or aerial system is slim, I cannot take responsibilty should that happen and will always pass on Humax's advice to do so.

Please find below the details you will need to follow to manual tune the receiver.

Press MENU
Select Installation
Enter your password (Default – 0000)
Select Default Setting

Enter your password (Default – 0000)

The receiver will then take 30 seconds and will switch off and restart.
When the product loads up again it will enter the Automatic Search; please press OK to STOP the search before any channels are found.
If any channels are found and you are asked to SAVE the channels please select NO and press OK.

Press OK twice to access the Installation menu, and then follow below:

Select Manual Search and press OK
You will now need to enter the channel number for each of the 6 Multiplexes available to receive all of the channels. After you enter each of the numbers below select the Search box and press OK. When the channels on each Multiplex are found press OK to save.
Follow the procedure above to search all 6 multiplexes. You will be able to see the signal levels of each of the Multiplexes.
Please ensure that the Network Search option is disabled.

Following the above procedure will ensure that you receive all of the channels available on the transmitter.


Humax PVR-9200T picture freezes after being powered up for 1-2 minutes, remote control and panel buttons have no effect and display clock also frozen . I disconnected the arial cables and the SCART cable and powered the unit for over 8 hours - appeared to be OK as the clock on display updated. Coneccting it back to the arial and SCART resulted in the same problem. I powered down the unit and removed the arial cables only and powered up the unit. It has been running for over 16hours and playback has been as normal.
Can anyone suggest why the unit can not function with the arial cables attached and how this can be overcome?

I tried the "Default Settings" route with only limited success. I've also contacted Humax support. They told me:

"We are aware of this and are working on a software update to correct the problem, its currently being developed and tested, we do not have a release date but once the software is ready it will be launched over the air and your unit will automatically download it."

Looks like we'll have to wait for the problem to be resolved.

The problem isn't with the 9200 per say because its affecting loads of different people from what I've seen.

Anyway to put a long story short I found the problem and its mux2. If you use other channels you'll find your freeview box/tv works fine so they've messed that up somehow!

In Response to Ed Ridsdale's solution, (the Power Saving option,) the 9200T doesn't have this option, only the 9300 has it under preferences - Miscellaneous Settings - Option 6 Power saving. Or does it but I can't find it????? Please help, as my Humax keeps freezing & it takes ages to populate the EPG????? Thanks guys.

i suspect the problems with the humax 9200T apparently freezing or locking up when using the remote is due to the EPG function. if the box is switched off at night when not used or in the early hours of the morning, a function set in the installation options to minimise power wastage, then the EPG needs repopulating and this can take ages, many hours to fully populate the full 7 day guide. i believe this is holding up the processor and making it slow to respond to commands from the remote. it is a similar issue with pc's when they stack instructions not having fast enough processing to handle what they are doing and new commands being inputted and seemingly not responding.
i intend to disable the switch off on my set to test the theory although i am confident this is the case as when i view the EPG over the 7 day period most of it is still vacant for hours. this function also varies with programme selected on the Humax, with the BBC being noticably slower than other channels.

I've had one for just over two years, mine freezes up also and has some delay when using the remote. My mum, daughter and a friend all have the same problems! I have to keep turning the power off!
New gadgets... maybe better to wait until they have been out a few more years before rushing out to buy one... maybe then they will know what they are doing.
Not impressed with the Humax 9200 at all, and for the price it cost you would think it should last longer than two years.
When ringing them up about the problem they put it all down to the digital change over in Cumbria... yet my daughter is having the same problem and lives over on the Northeast. Does anyone know anyone with this product and is not having a problem? I very much doubt it.

My 9200T froze last weekend and guess what? Yup - I bought a replacement! Just before taking the old one to the tip tomorrow I thought I'd try Google. It led me here and, well, now I have TWO working PVRs! Sincere thanks guys for this thread. I'm sure having two PVRs is a good thing!

Hi, Yes that worked fine for the pictures, but I don't get any sound. Shouldn't be a signal issue as only a stones throw from Winter Hill. Sound OK going through antenna.

Any ideas?

Thanks worked for me. Winter Hill transmitter is changing its settings to be ready for switch over. On the BBC web site it states this.

The changes to the transmitters are being made by DMOL, the company that manages the digital terrestrial television multiplexes. The changes are necessary because there are now more channels and interactivity than when Freeview was originally launched. Some Freeview boxes will no longer be able to function as a result of these network changes.
In a few cases, you may have no choice but to replace an old set-top box with a new model.

Not sure what they did on the Winter Hill transmitter today (8 Sept 09) but one of my freeview boxes needed rescan and the Humax started to freeze. Many thanks indeed for the advice on the Huxax which fixed its freeze.

the box is frozen with the following ---- on the front screen. If I turn the box of at the plug; there is no response from any buttons on the remote or box, I see for a couple of seconds, the loading screen split into three or four drifting across the screen. Any ideas?
I have tried the un plug aerial thing, but it does not work. As soon as 100% appears it goes blank.

My Humax PVR9200T froze, phoned Humax, they E-mailed same solution everyone is using, it worked for about four minutes. What needs to be done to keep it going for longer. Mine is about three years old and I think it is a great PVR but could do without this problem.

Mine is only 2 weeks old and it froze in index mode. No remote buttons worked and neither would the front power button. I turned it off at the back and it nooted up ok with now probles. It look to me that this is a 'feature' of the product.

Can't believe it's fixed without any bother. Machine just out of warranty. I was just working out my hassle loaded/expensive options when I thought to Google the prob.The best value piece of kit I've ever bought is working again! (The 4:3 default needed tweaking back to 16:9)

Only variation for me so far is remembering to search for new channels in the following order:

To manually tune the PVR for all channels from the Hannington transmitter, you will need to first perform a default setting.
To do this, go to: MENU > INSTALLATION > DEFAULT SETTING (default password is 0000)
Once the unit reboots and starts to scan for channels, press ok to stop the search.
Then go to: MENU > INSTALLATION > MANUAL SEARCH
Change the channel number at the top to 50 and then press ok on SEARCH at the bottom.
Save these results and repeat the search process with the channel numbers:
43. 46. 40. 44. and 41
Once you have finished searching on 41 and have saved the results, press the exit button.

This will be the unit tuned into the Hannington transmitter

Mine just froze for the first time too. Assume it's something to do with the antenna work they've been doing on our transmitter (Mendip) The fix below worked fine thanks

had the same problem with mine yesterday, first the picture froze then the sound went, then nothing worked! Had mine for 3 and a half years! the shame is I went out and bought a newer model before I found this solution! Anyway the kids are happy as they have the old one now! Thanks to all.

Had this problem today - spoke to Humax who say it's due to the digital switchover. Something to do with encrypted signals that some Humax boxes are unable to cope with. Told me to do a factory reset (same procedure as Chad recommended) and all working fine again.

Bob, assuming you have a widescreen TV here - if you go into the preferences in the menu you'll need to set the screen size back to 16:9. Mine did the same after the reset, defaulted back to the 4:3 setting and was missing the top and bottom of the picture off.

The reset fixed the freezing problem though, thanks for the advice all, much appreciated.

Thank you everyone! My Humax 9200T is 18 months old and was completely frozen, only way to defrost it was to turn it on and off again but then the same thing would happen again... until I followed the tips about resetting to default settings. I've still got all my treasured (sad - I know) recordings and my Humax is back to normal.

Just followed the steps above.

Good news: It's no longer freezing
Bad news: It didn't pick up all the channels first off. This might be because I plugged the aerial back in after I'd set it to default settings.

Got the thing to retune with automatic search and it is now working fine. Feeling v smug that I didn't punch the thing out of frustration (my usual stone urge approach to technology before I calm down and go to the net).

Yep, this is some kind of overflow fault in the software, doing a reset by doing the default settings seems to clear it all out. You do not have to disconnect the antenna, its not a hardware issue.

I've had this problem start on my machine yesterday. The picture was freezing only a few seconds after loading. I have carried out the disconnection of the aerial and reset the default settings of the channels via the menu. The problem has cleared! Thanks for the advice.

Just had the same problem, mine is less than 1 years old. It would not even switch off manually, I had to switch the mains off! However unplugging the aerial going into menu and restoring the settings to their default value seems to have done the trick. Apart from this it is a great piece of kit.

I also had this problem. I found that if I unplugged the aerial then turned the unit on it worked perfectly but froze as soon as I plugged the aerial back in. I suspect a bug in the last software update. Try unplugging the aerial, turn the unit on and then press menu - installation - the code (0000) then option 4 software default setting. Reset the system. This seems to have worked for me and perhaps Humax will sort out this problem with the next software update.

Don't know if you have sorted this, just had same problem also 2 years old.
Sorted it by switching unit on and as soon as it trys to start press menu. if all goes well and your in the menu try setting unit back to default settings.this won't effect anything that has been recorded to hard drive.

It appears that when the system has an update it ends up just adding new channels so eventualy you end up with channels in the wrong order, setting this back to default corrects this.
